Umbreon is so mush cooler than you make it sound, the rings all over its body make it have on of the best designs!

A dark type evolved by friendship strike me as a type of friend that would use ruthless (the poison sweat) yet sneaky (the lurking hunter) means to defend a friend('s honor) in need.

Umbreon was probably kept from being EVIL~ (MermaidMan freak out) because it is an Eeveelution. Eevee can't be one of Pokémon's top marketed mascots if it has an evil side.

After watching a ton of Lockstin videos, I've decided I should see about getting a book on yokai

So we could get poison and flying eeveelutions!

It's actually in the top three Eeveelutions.
Granted it's top skill is still "Being able to take a lot of punishment really well", but it looks adorable while doing so, and it's got a flashlight head! Who wouldn't want a pal that can not only see in the dark but can also light up the room?

If Umbreon was originally intended to evolve via a "poison" stone, then maybe that was going to be a reference to the Sesshoseki, "Killing Stone," the now-broken rock that Japanese folklore holds was used to seal away the evil fox spirit Tamamo-no-Mae. The rock is located in a region of Japan were subterranean geological activity often allows toxic fumes to leak out at the surface, and the people in the region believed the air was being poisoned by Tamamo-no-Mae, lashing out from within the stone she'd been imprisoned in. The Sesshoseki has the association with poison, obviously, but given Tamamo-no-Mae is one of the most high-profile evil foxes in Japanese folklore, where foxes were often more benevolent than in China or Korea, it works post-type-change, too. Also works as a counterpoint to Espeon, with Tamamo-no-Mae being the kyuubi-no-kitsune to Espeon's nekomata

The name "Umbreon" comes from the "umbra", the shadow of the moon cast on the earth during a solar eclipse. And continuing the idea, the rings on the sides and the forehead of Umbreon look like a solar eclipse

The whole “black cats bring bad luck” is just some religious superstition by Christians and other narrow-minded people. If it does bring bad luck, it’s usually to itself, as black cats are sadly adopted less frequently than cats with other fur colors/patterns.

given its Pokédex entries and it getting it's power from the moon, it feels like Umbreon should actually be fairy type (it was just a decade or so early for that one)

Umbreon is my favorite eeveelution and my favorite dark type Pokémon. I juat wish gamefreak would make it learn toxic through level up to go with its pokedex entries
