Religion is needed. But the atheist and the theist should not bicker over who is right. Both their views are untestable therefore there is no point in debating or arguing about it. What is important is that both share moral foundations that promotes the well being of society.
It is however unfortunate that some religion espouse the annihilation of those who do not share their belief. Can we not just agree to disagree?

The last two weeks has been hard for me to accept. Knowing this Middle East conflicts will continue from one generation to another generations, many of those whom have not experienced war may not be deeply understand the impact’s of the one who had suffered. I was born in the middle of the Vietnam War, growing up with no religion myself. Did not know the difference of having a religion belief will make any different? Today, Many are so called believer, did not do accordingly to the Bible, “You should love one another just as I have loved you” John 13:34 and then “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who hurt you” Matthew 5:44
So, I don’t believed having a religion beliefs can changed a person. And in the hand, I am seeing the current conflict have to do with the religion, God said and so on. This has been proved in reality that having a religion belief may not suitable in this society just because other religion’s might disagree with you.

Why can't they just say Christianity and instead of "religion"? Since that is what this is really about,an attempt to destroy God and his word, but others have been attempting the same thing for centuries and failed, and this generation of non believers are no different.

Hitch wasn't interested in how he sounded, only what he said! The fact that he was an eloquent speaker to rival the authority was a helpful asset. Anyone can learn how to speak like Hitch and others. Long may his insight inform humanity!

Atheists, given no moral structure-with no authority higher than ourselves there are no morals to be agreed upon. This has given us Hitler, Mao, Stalin and Pol Pot. If there is no God, we are doomed and atheism has no answers.

What people don't understand is as spiritual beings, no religion is impossible. People can make even their preferences into a religion but it's always there no matter what it's called. You can't disavow the very thing that makes human beings unique in the world without tragedy. As history reveals, the greatest errors weren't religion, but the perversion of it. Therefore in my opinion we would be better off if academia would stick it's nose somewhere useful rather than making new hideous religions like climate change cults.

I'm a Christian, and I agree with the proposition as stated. Religion is (overall) the cause of many of the world's most hurtful events and tragedies. Christianity, however, is not a "religion" it's a relationship with Christ. Judaism is not a "religion" either. It's a relationship of a chosen people with a loving God. Both have been defaced and degraded by those who would turn them into a religion, and use them in unchristlike or ungodly ways.

However without Christianity and Judaism we might well lack science, music, art, medicine, and education as we know it. Philosophy would be gutted. The legal system would be weakened.

All good things can be counterfeited and used by evil people to produce bad results.

Religious people allways talk so nice about love and humanism etc. But in practice they institute a series of rules of behaviour and morality that have nothing to do with humanism and only hinders it

It's too bad the middle guy on the right wasn't challenged about his evil in the name of atheism. Hitler was a Roman Catholic and never renounced it. His troops had belt bucklers that said something like "God on our side." His very first treaty was with the Vatican about giving the church the right to educate in exchange for them dismantling their political party. I'm not aware of the others claiming anything in the name of atheism. They were their own religions. State religions. I assume they considered "regular" religion to be competition. Hitchens could tell you a lot more about this if he were here.

I managed to grind past the micro issue!

I'm so relieved that the motion was carried. It does however, still disturb me, at just how many stupid people that still exist (based on % comparison/assumption). You're holding the world back, for yourselves, your children and your grandchildren.
Those who believe in bunkum, I hold responsible for allowing political leaders the power to convince them of more bunkum, which gives them power over us all via minority votes in our so called democracies.

It gives them the kind of power that convinces us that the United Nations is a democratic organisation, yet somehow, the veto of just one/abstention of 2 = 3-15 carries = just 20%, decides that no humanitarian aid be allowed to Palestinians.
