Is AI more creative than humans? In a recent study, researchers from the University of Arkansas pitted 151 human participants against ChatGPT-4 in three tests designed to measure divergent thinking, which is considered an indicator of creative thought.

The three tests utilized were: the Alternative Uses Task, which asks participants to come up with creative uses for everyday objects like a rope or a fork; the Consequences Task, which invites participants to imagine possible outcomes of hypothetical situations, such as "what if humans no longer needed sleep?"; and the Divergent Associations Task, in which participants were asked to write 10 nouns that are as semantically distant as possible. For example, writing down words like pen, paper, and scissors would not succeed in the test, but writing down pen, bottle, and diversity would be much better.

In tasks requiring such imaginative leaps, ChatGPT provided more original and elaborate answers than the human participants.

So, you might be thinking, "That’s it, the end is near, AI has prevailed!" Well, wait a minute. The study's authors remind us that "AI is dependent on the assistance of a human user. The creative potential of AI is in a constant state of stagnation unless prompted." They also note that human creativity is rooted in thoughts of the real world and inner life, which is much more complicated than what language models do. And that is why art created by humans will probably always move us more than anything generated by AI. Even if it finds a creative way to use a fork.
