A master sharpener and bladesmith who taught me freehand says expensive ones are a waste of money and a Japanese King brand is perfect for beginners. I don't know about others, but I like that brand.
ОтветитьThose some serious elf ears
ОтветитьI paid way less on Amazon under another brand, but the excess mud made it difficult to avoid scratching my knives. It's not an issue with my Naniwa Chosera stones.
ОтветитьI'm the guy who bought these stones to learn sharpening then gave up.
ОтветитьWhere can i buy those pliers?
ОтветитьWow! This is the stone I bought. Same colors, but smaller. I wasnt to impressed. My first time learning watching videos.
I thought I could do better. Wasnt seeing the sharpness I wanted. Haven't finished your video.
This explains why I didn't get the results I was hoping for.
Calling quality quality and identifying bullshit as bullshit ? Add in some laughs...I like it .
I will look at your stuff again.
I received my $12 blue and white stone, excited to sharpen my $250 Japanese knife… watched this video as the stone lay in front of me. I immediately started the return and decided on the King KDS 1000/6000
ОтветитьWish i seen this when i bought my set. At least it was more like 30 bucks and came with 4 grits. Now that i've learned how to keep an angle (thanks to you) im buying a diamond stone.
ОтветитьDid you even watch the Dune movies? Clearly their ships are big tubes!
ОтветитьHaHaHa - I received this piece of junk yesterday from Amazon and yes, it is indeed a junk! Now I am studying carefully everything on this website before making another attemp to buy sharpening tools. Thak you very much for sharing with us your knowledge and techniques!
ОтветитьI was always frustrated with the DudeSharp whetstones I got from Amazon. Another crappy part of those stones is they loose flatness halfway through using them. I’ve only used it a few times and after flattening it a few times, I’m down to half of what the stone once was. Piece of crap.
ОтветитьProbably a little overpriced for what it is but try the Warthog v4. Sharpens super fast and super sharp.
ОтветитьYes that's true. I have one and can say that Cheap clone Chinese sharpeners are waste of time. On the other hands it is very difficult to find diamond plate higher then 1500 grit at the countries out of usa. Japanese original wet stones or Arkansas stones are also ultra expensive. So what people can do. There is a problem and somebody saying that we solve with a good price. I think good manufacturers should find some way. I respect victorinox to produce very effective sharpeners based on ceramic, diamond or classical with accessible price. Also thanks to sharpall for very quality diamond products with low price. But where are Leatherman, fallkniven, bucks, mora etc. They all have a few diamond sharpeners which are produced by same company printed requested brand. They don't have their own R&D. As last dia company i mean dmt, what a wayward behavior it has. Same graphite, same pressure same electro plated but huge price. Very good encouragement for Chinese companies.
ОтветитьThat is a low quality stone indeed, but you just look clumsy in the video.
ОтветитьI've just ordered one of those recommended diamond stones on Amazon, bit pricey so it better be good,
Ответитьwatch out for the amazon shit stone hitmen.
Ответитьi through these stones into the woods because they were so shif. now i use them to level my naniwa stones lol. terrible is right.
ОтветитьWatched this a while ago. Bought one of these stones brand new and boxed at a car boot sale this morning for the princely sum of £0.75 ... say a dollar and 10 cents .... just to see for myself how bad they really are. Your judgement is spot on !
ps.The one I got went under the exotic brand name of 'FlyBunny'
Does it matter that the diamond stones are only one “coarseness”? Would you need a coarse, medium & fine? We bought a Zwilling whetstone when we got a knife set from them. Felt ok, but it’s not pleasant, so it stays in the drawer.
ОтветитьWhile I wouldn't buy the expensive stones you are referring to, the cheap stones do have a place. I have been using them along with really cheap knives from charity stores to teach people how to practice angles. Getting a "high" grit amazon stone is only a few $ and they work well enough to tell when you get the right angle. You can get your knives to shave hair with them and it builds confidence in the people learning.
It is cheaper than having them dig pits into my nicer stones, I only use King import water stones as I have a literal pallet of different grits from a liquidation sale so maybe teaching on a diamond might be better I haven't used 1.
Just never buy any stones under 800 grit as they are all basically 120 grit or worse in reality and will eat cheap knives.
"I have a conscience." looks down
I feel the same way. I used to work for a martial arts retailer and could have started my own brand to buy cheap things from factories in china and over charging naïve customers on amazon. I do have days where i think about how much money I feel I let go but at the end of the day, I do live with peace knowing I'm not scamming people and instead tell people what is good and what isn't. Great video. I am subbed.
This is exactly the one I have and now I know why I can never get my knife sharp when I can get them sharp on another stone at home country..
Ответить'course words hurt, lad. if you're as sharp as your knives (and I have every reason to believe that you are), you probably won't use any hurtin' words. just (as i'd later discover) incisive satire towards those who would recklessly risk other's lives for a buck (which is called "punching up"). which is not the same, even if it looks the same.
by copyright laws do you mean vexatious litigants? because yeah, those people are ridiculous.
sometimes I wonder if I should get my brand name put on one of these (if I can get one that's good enough quality to recommend to anyone else, i.e. relatively slow dishing) and just sell them as crappy influencer tat (with a caution "while this will work for sharpening a knife, it will ultimately destroy the knife because it dishes easily")
You opened this video like a fuckin G
ОтветитьHey I tried googling this for a long time but the notch on the blade, is that the 45° angle or is that just for your finger to flick the knife open? Why is the notch there
ОтветитьDamn. I wish I would have seen this video before I bough that one.
ОтветитьThere’s a reason why I call it Scamazon
ОтветитьLook : yes we have alien ships that crashed here on earth. But what can I tell you if you already dont believe ?
The aliens have kids too !
They go into other galaxies times and spaces to observe and sometimes the aliens come all together like all families do..
So the kids like everyone else's kids they drink beer and just like that they go on joyride here on earth. As you can imagine accidents happen right then WHEN TEEN ALIENS ARE DRUNK ok ?
Please believe us : Your government.
OMG, are you serious? Is this true. I think I am going to be sick.
ОтветитьI don't mind buying a miserable sharpening stone made in china but only for the price tagged on alibaba
ОтветитьI respect what this guy says. I have purchased these sets of knife sharpeners. They come in sets. You might be able to buy one. My experience with the cheap stones is excellent. I took a cheap machete that was 1/8 inch thick. Very dull. I sharpened it better than a mora knife. I did not believe it until I did the paper test. Mora has sent me the sharpest knives I’ve ever had. I did not think knives could get that sharp. I cut my finger on the blade with just a passing on the blades edge. The machete is to that quality. I started off with some cheap Diamond plate stones ( I tried to use the whet stones and the metal was to thick to form a edge). I purchased a 320 grit cheap Diamond stone to wear down the metal to get a edge. I have not used the machete except for the paper test. The edge retention has to do with the type of metal and angle of grind. I’m not a professional. Just someone who wanted to be able to sharpen his own knife. They do work. From my experience. I will look in this content creators description for recommendations. It’s best if people see if this is something you want to invest in. It took me over four hours to get this machete sharp. Maybe you don’t want to take that long. Tormek T-4 is the way to go. 1/8 of a inch thick blade and 11 inches in length with no edge at all 4 hours plus.
Ответитьi have a stone like this. It has a 500 and a 1000 side. Ive been using it for over a year, and its been great for all my outdoor knives. The reason it has been great, is because I just paid 1,99€.
ОтветитьYou have integrity my friend, total respect
ОтветитьI bought one of these recently in Russia. It costed about 15 dollars for me. What seemed suspicious to me is that how quick it wears out. But i sharpened my knives without issues and for 15 bucks i guess it's a good value.
Need to say that I have no experience in sharpening except IKEA sharpeners
I have one of these and I have blamed my technique for not getting razor sharp blades. I saw your review of the Sharpal doublesided and bought that and a Sharpal strop and now the back of my hand is completely hair free. Thank you for the advice.
ОтветитьShapton Glass Stones or nothing !!
ОтветитьThat whetstone sold for 10$ all over the place, in that price you don't have to many alternatives
ОтветитьGreat video! I fell for these stones off Amazon initially as well and spent more time trying to flatten them after one use than actually sharpening my knives. I recently went with a better diamond stone, after doing some light research and have been really happy with it.
ОтветитьSEVENTEEN POUNDS OF MUSCLE IN 17 DAAAAAAAAAAYS. FAST EFFECTIVE RELIEEEF
ОтветитьI’ve independently found same manufacturer you recommended as reliable also. I am a small business job shop type machine shop type business. When I simply don’t want to invest the cost of these premium diamond plates, yes, I sometimes buy a cheaper brand.
ОтветитьOhh no... I bought the whole set up to 8000... xD and when I had hope for the diamond 400/1000 you said that those are also not created equally :'( I knew something was wrong with those stones because you can see similar ones but the price varies a lot from "brand" to "brand". But since I bought the stones from A German brand "Panteer" I thought it would be worth it. Thanks for the video!
ОтветитьI bought one of these exact stones for 12 bucks... First timer here and I couldn't get it to sharpen anything... For all I can tell my knife was duller than I started with... I felt like the knife sinks into the stone and never creates a proper apex...
Now looking for a diamond steel plate one. 😊 Wish I've seen your videos earlier... 😢
Bought one that looks like yours white and blue for 5 dollars and you're right that blue droplets is messy
I'm a beginner I used it and i didn't sharpen sh1t.
Why do I see Japanese chefs sharpening knives on messy whetstones that need to be soaked in water?
ОтветитьThe bottom of a coffee cup 10 strokes on each side and my kitchen knife was cutting like a dream. Started doing this since I seen your honing steel video
ОтветитьI’m glad I found your channel because I’m an assistant scout master of my sons troop and I purchased this exact product to start learning how to maintain my knives as well as my son and fellow scouts knives. So I will be returning it and look into some of the items you recommended. Thanks for the great content.
