SOLAR BLANKET vs. FIXED SOLAR PANELS - What's best? Shauno's Ultimate Guide for 4WD Solar Setups!

Just caught this videos lads. Was a good watch. What’s your general thought on a fixed moulded panel for the bonnet?

My solar blanket has stoped working and I am just doing up my 80LC and really need some solar.

So I'm confused, you didn't actually say what's better, I'm not buying an amorphous blankett at 3grand, maybe the 300watt redarc, but is that any better than the 200 portable panels power wise, which is going to produce more power? 300 watt blanket, or a 200 watt foldable panel?
Signs obviously point to the 300 watt blanket, but is this the correct choice? You have the toys to play with and test, we have to buy to try,

in my case the blanket works better than a solid panel ,many people will be happy with all this info thanks for all the great videos.

A couple of points that's missed on blankets. They are brilliant, but they do not like gett8ng wet, the elements or dust. People fall in the trap of leaving them out over night(dew) or hard mounting them.

A good set up is a hard mount through a dc to dc but if your camped up run your blanket through its own reg to the same battery (not through the dc as it will debate the higher output panel) so if you run 200w fixed and a 300w blanket you could potentially put 500w into the battery if required and especially good for lithium that could take 50 amps if required

The folding kits are a struggle on space and use, blankets really do help with space and also if your close to gvm

A sola blacker would be one of the best way as we run a fridge and lights on a camping set up in the Hilux the one thing i have not got my head around is the sola side we camp up to 10 days on the at a trip and get a blacker can mean we can stay in one place longer with out running out of power

Hey Shauno, You said that the wires need to be as short as possible between your solar panel and your battery. How effective is your hard panel on your 200 Series with your lithium battery?

Slowly been buying gear as I need it, and a new solar blanket would be great for longer beach camps! Definitely would have been handy on K'Gari/Fraser

The solar blanket would have help when we went to the Bathurst 12hr my battery was dead every night by 9pm and would be flat till the sun was up my beers were never really cold and our food was ruined

I have yet to settle on solar like Shauno with the dirty 30. My camping is usually around driving a lot so solar hasn't been necessary, but I can't stop in one place for more than a night without solar. A solar blanket would be perfect to allow me to stop in one place for more than night.

Can you run 2 fridges on solar?

If my hubby had a solar panel on his Nissan patrol, the dogs and i would go away with him more often!

A good quality solar blanket would be an awesome addition to our free camping set up in our prado as we run a cheaper version of but it creates heaps of stress chasing the perfect full sun locations as it doesn’t work well in the low lights. So this would be amazing as it gives me a chance to sit down and just enjoy a cold beer 🍺

A solar blanket would be perfect for our small little camper trailer going off grid as often as possible with my wife and our 4 kids takes alot of space and money im currently running an old gas fridge so we done run out of power so we cant run it in the car on the way there

I'd love one of these to set-up my 12v system. I currently don't have a 12v set-up due to cost but I'm saving my $$ and almost have enough for a battery and box so a blanket will help keep it charging 🙂

Even though I have a fixed panel on my 80series, I always try to park in the shade and can't get the most out of it. A portable set up I could put in sun would help me stay longer and enjoy more. Keeping the missus and kids happy. Got a 280ah lithium powering everything including induction cooktop. So need to recharge asap every day.. keep this awesome content coming.

Slide out panel on the dog box. Protect it and fixes airflow issue. Make lower mount on Industrial slides

Nothing worse than the car battery not having enough power left in the morning to fire up the car and your stuck waiting for help!
But yes there’s a worse situation because the fridge is on the blink now without power so the beers are warm 😮😢🤷‍♂️🙄.

I definitely need a new solar blanket to keep our fridge going in the LandCruiser. My 200w solar blanket just failed warped on 3 of the 8 panels now only putting out 14.56w now changing my fridge battery with a generator daily

I bought a cheaper blanket, had to get my knife out and cut the sections open to re solder the links.

Another con to solar blankets is you can’t leave them out in the rain. Learned that the hard way!

i would like a solar blanket becuase, well, i've never had solar. we have a fridge in our our old 76 but the camper trailer dosen't even have a battery. we have traveled many thousands of km's with our very basic setup and think it might be time to give the wife and kids a few luxeries like lights at night, device charging etc without having to drive the car for an hour or too a day. G’day Shaun and the crew love the show and watch every episode my set up has a small panel on the roof and I supplement it with a cheap folding blanket it works ok but man a red arc blanket would work heaps better with my redarc charger 👍👍 keep up the good work guys Cheers Mark

Hey, i have a kings 200w solar blanket that i use to top up my 138AH AGM at camp, via the kings 12v control panel. I’ve got a 20a redarc DCDC charger (that came with the car) also installed. But, i also have the solar regulator installed too. My question is, do i need that regulator? Or does the dcdc charger have one built in? How do i check, and if it does, will using both affect my charge input? TIA
