I cannot answer the latent functions of the school when my teacher asked at school. I remember we all answered that we came to school to learn. Now the school is a lot more than learning lectures. We are learning social interaction. I don't understand what a school experience gives me during my school days. I only understand and miss after I am now a university student. But I will learn my best to understand and appreciate my time as a university student now. Thank you all the Crash Course members for such informative videos, it is literally an online sociology class.
ОтветитьAnd look at us now lol
Ответитьbruh
ОтветитьI can't even recite the pledge of alliance even if my life depended it
ОтветитьOh school was supposed to help me make friends? Haha didn't get the memo
ОтветитьI love that as part of additional recourses for our sociology class we have these videos. It is also funny how our teacher is always warning us that it's focused a lot on american context. :D Which is true, because from this video it looks like USA has one of the best educational systems, which is deffinetly not true. Here in the Czech Republic compulsory school attendance functions since 1774. Also our entire educational system is free and there is no religon in most schools (public or private). Of course there are many countries that have worse educational system than USA, but I don't think you have the best one. But it's just my opinion, so please don't come at me... :D
ОтветитьWhere’s John green?
ОтветитьYAWA ASA ANG STRUCTURAL FUNCTIONALIST ANI HAHHAHAHAHHAHA
ОтветитьWe are teaching our children the wrong things in school. We are creating a societal system where each section is dependent upon the other sections. This means when one section fails then the rest also fail.
We need to teach our children to be independent. Instead, we teach children how to be obedient workers.
To give meaning to someone's life teach them how to grow their own food, build their own house, repair their own car, cook their own meals, eat to stay healthy and most importantly how to meditate and pray. This gives life meaning.
Being a millennial, I was disturbed to finally realized that education is and always was political. But more serious issue is why have we JUST NOW have started "twerking" the system

ОтветитьIn irvine, california, we have primary school until 6th. middle school is just 7th and 8th grade
Ответить"history" of education. Glances over major moments and misses a ton of context on the introduction of public schools and prussias involvement. Pledge of allegiance is a social norm? you just made me realize how weird saying a pledge every day is. Its indoctrination and conditioning daily to kids who are forced to go to school. Its not the worst, but its still worth noting how weird that truly is.
ОтветитьWe should send kids to primary school until halfway through fourth grade then switch schools halfway to the middle school until 9th grade when they go to high school like normal
ОтветитьHow does this video define sociology
ОтветитьSeparation of church and state are not in the constitution.
Ответитьtrue but it goes nicely with with my intro to sociology book lol
kinda just adds to it
Crash course: college for criminals
ОтветитьI urge everyone going to college in the US to apply for the Federal Application For Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Especially if you're going back to school over the age of 25 (when your parents income is not considered)!
I earned my degree 100% debt-free and completely funded with grants from the FAFSA. Considering I got my degree in finance, no debt makes me very happy!
Conveniently avoided the gender education gap. and men's under representation in social sciences.
ОтветитьThe thought bubbles are my favourite part
ОтветитьThis anchor is so beautiful
ОтветитьThis channel is getting me through university
ОтветитьSchools help you learn to be social?? I disagree. I was just as socially awkward when i graduated as when i started.
ОтветитьAnyone know where i can find good revision videos for the uk sociology without half the video being random nonsense i definitely will not need in an exam
Ответитьyou can't talk about a social institution focused on influencing and directing cultural norms within a society without talking about money. And it is a societal norm to acquire debt to build credit. Our economy runs on capital and so does our education, and our society revolves around capital and money to buy homes, buy cars, build and spend credit.....our parents are educated enough to say hey your going to school, to get a job afterwards to play in this big monopoly game. IF you don't have an education, you don't have money, and without money you can't be a productive member of society...consuming, investing, building or creating.....ugh....can anyone help me say this better....education is amazing....how else would we pass information from generation to generation....but i would argue that money is creating stability and education is just common sense to get an education....get a skill.....work....save...spend...own....
ОтветитьContrary to popular belief, the US is a Republic --not a Democracy. Common misconception. :)
ОтветитьI went to school in fair fax Virginia lol hello yeah
ОтветитьSadly, the factory school model was incorporated from prussia as a means of creating docile subjects. The main purpose was not to increase literacy rates...
Well, i guess i opened my mouth too early.
Lol
Speed ...u have to speak a little bit slow...ur lecture is just like a news reporter ...so speed should be slow a little bit
ОтветитьI need Arabic translation
Ответитьthe socialization aspect is always brought up as a plus side for schooling but we must remember that socialization is not taught at school it is self learned by kids during recess time and could well happen in streets in their neighborhood as well. as we all know the deepest lessons are self-taught so we should put more effort and resources on self education and transition out of the school system that did not evolve fast enough to fit our current needs of life long learning to adapt to our fast changing world.
Ответить"The average American spends 13 and a half years in SCHOOL." SCHOOL ≠ EDUCATION
SCHOOL is the social institution you're discussing here. This video should be called "School in Society".
Fun search (& much more informative than her hand-waving dross): JOHN TAYLOR GATTO
I am in LOVE with this lady
ОтветитьPleaseeee do these for UK sociological structures because most of your videos have helped my alevels so far and are incredibly helpful
ОтветитьI studied Sociology and felt that it taught me absolutely nothing new about the world that I live in that I already didn't know. It just geared me to be more literate about such topics. Sociology was all just common sense. I felt like you'd have to be an Alien to not know half the things they spoke about.
ОтветитьI love sociology
Ответитьthis girl is definitely cute lol
ОтветитьI was always indifferent to the pledge. It was just somethin u did, until I just stopped one day. Most ppl who are educated didn't even know about the electoral college. How does public school help with teaching u to vote? U don't need school for that. And we live in a republic with somewhat democratic practices. Even interracial schools are segregated. And schools are mostly homogenous depending on where u live. Upperclass kids go to school with upperclass kids, poor with poor, blacks with blacks, whites with whites. It all depends. Schools are mostly authoritarian. We don't vote on who we get as teachers. All of that is decided for us by those in charge. Democracy where? Even our education system was decided for us by those in power.
ОтветитьBeautiful 😙😙❤
ОтветитьI love her.
ОтветитьThe majority of both undergraduate and postgraduate students are female. Are men are under represented in university because of societal biases against men?
Ответитьimpressive
ОтветитьSpending all that time in school and still not good enough, smart enough.
