Excellent advice regarding the bend test. It might look decent but beware.

MIG welder in my area where I work is not used a lot , i use TIG 99% of the time and MIG welder has an argon mix tank that sits in one spot forever.
The MIG is usually used for the wire feeder , using it as cold feed for the TIG and only gets hooked up occasionally for a little MIG welding.
Next time I'm going to weld something really important with the MIG I'm going to remember and consider laying the tank on the floor and mix it up a bit.

Jody, I am planning to buy a mig welder and your videos are really usefull for remember what I have done 25 years ago. But I have a comment: any test plate you use are really thick then the problem is to get a good penetration but my problem is the oposite, I rarelly weld thick metal....jajaja.... 90% it´s less than 1/8, often 1/16... and my problem is to not "perforate" it...... I think you should make a video about only thin metal sheet welding... and all the trick about this.
A 3 passes hug to you.

Jody I've been welding off and on for 20 years and have been watching you for at least half that time, particularly in the last 3 years since I really got back into it, but wasn't subscribed yet. What the hell, let's fix that.

Thanks!

Hi Jody, just want some clarification on (SHORT CIRCUIT), is that the same as normal Mig welding. I am confused but I think it is the same but it is just the proper terminology, or is there a difference?

do gasses not have different densities? why wouldn't they separate, given enough time?

Perhaps it just occurs slower, or the pressurized environment within the tank may effect it as well.. it also may be that they aren't separating technically, but perhaps the mixture gets less even? It would make sense that the molecules would tend towards grouping together with other similar molecules - perhaps this force isn't strong enough to fully separate them, but to change the mixture enough to effect weld quality? idk, but we don't have the sciences 100% figured out - it seem pretty obviously the hypothesis that gasses physically never separate is not accurate across the board. It seems akin to the earth-is-the-center-of-the-universe hypothesis that the worlds greatest minds all believed for decades (centuries?)

I have watched your welding videos for a long long time. I have learned a lot from you sharing your advice. I could always weld fairly good but a few years back my welding improved 10 fold with something you had said that anyone can follow. It was when you said about cleaning your metal before welding it. It was the best advice that helped me improve the holding power of a weld. Thank you for all of your tips and advice over the years.

Just want to say thanks a bunch for the videos. Great tips, and you’ve helped me out a lot, both in school and in the field. I’m not a welder, but I just started a maintenance job at a brand new place, and they put me in the fab shop and I’ve had to do a lot of welding lately. Your videos have been a really great help because I wasn’t very good at welding when I started this. Is there any way you could make a video on how to weld up a bad fit up when your stick welding? I’ve run into some things at work where I’ve had a gap and I didn’t know how to weld it without burning through? Appreciate it. Keep up the great content!

I normally weld at 580 to 600 on my feed and 25 to 28 volts on 1/8 to 3/16 steel sheet at my job but we have to get a good number of hoppers per day.

I had 4 people watching me weld today. My assistant was was going over the the cuts and grinds with a flapdisc. My machine was running like pure garbage, and everyone was wondering why I just wasn't burning it in.
Well the fit up wasn't good, the welder was being powered off of a generator that wasn't producing clean power, and the zinc rich paint/primer wasn't removed far enough from the weld zone.

Being onsite welding in a unique space we just didn't have all the normal resources at hand initially. Once we got hooked up to consistent power, got the surfaces prepped, and got the fit up sorted the weld was uneventful, and pretty.

The majority of a quality weld happens before the arc is struck.

Thanks for the cylinder rolling tip. My cylinders sit for a long time between uses. I actually work offshore and am responsible for a gas chromatograph that uses a calibration gas with a very low concentration of H2S. When we get towards the end of the bottle we always have H2S issues. I think this anecdotally bears out your bottle rolling analysis.

You should make a video on welding lap joints that are circular like a flange. I started doing that at my job pulse spray. It's something I'm not accustom to. Edge melt is a big issue with me. How would you prevent edge melt?

I need a clarification of "Short Circuit MIG" as apposed to just plain "MIG". I thought all MIG welding (Flux or Gas) is essentially a short circuit process.

Need more videos on spray and pulse. Their higher deposition processes and almost require no manipulation. Undercut is a bigger problem on multipass t joints i get kind of confused on the gun angles on spray. The top bead always gives me issues triple bead fillets on spray or pulse.

Jody Thanks Brother👍🏼 It’s really good to know regarding stirring the C25 Cyl especially for some of us hobbiests that may only light up the old MIG machine every so often or just longer durations between projects. Cylinder Safety is one of the most important things in welding processes due to the types and mixtures of different gases under extreme pressure. Thanks again and be safe 😎

Was welding today and trying to weld horizontaly as flat as possible and one thing it clicked for me was the puddle. What I did was slow down at the start let my puddle form than I was like chasing the hot metal right on the edge just how the old man sad. And i did small movement just enough to widen out the weld. And it looked so flat. Like pulse level of flatness. And it was hot as well. Also 90 degree gun angle as close to the metal. And at 45 degrees as well. Just dont go out of that puddle. It was something I did learn in school but didn't paid attention to when working.
