Where I live, we don't necessarily need the sirens, but I love the sound. I'd say the personal favorite atm is the eows 612 alternative wail, but I absolutely LOVE the 8/12 port sirens

nothing can replace a siren. sure a phone warning is good. but all it takes is your phone being in another room and you wont know.

Where I'm from We'd get 3 or 4 storms / tornados bad enough to use the sirens every summer. I panic a little every time I hear one.

The Cedar Rapids area Whelan tornado test siren sound once a month every first Wednesday of the month and is probably the scariest siren and the siren I grew up with. It not only has an announcement recorded, but it also tests a nuclear warning siren due to being within the fallout radius of a nuclear power facility.

Chicago gal here... I can attest to the alternating wail Federeal Electric "scary tornado siren" or "The Chicago Siren' as I'm from Chicago & I've heard it first-hand. It is unbelievably creepy af. One thing you've not mentioned is that tornado sires are not meant for people to hear indoors. They are to alert people who are outside & who may not have access to radio, TV, or cellphone reception to seek shelter immediately. That is their true purpose. It's still a first line of defense in rural areas or anywhere TV, radio, & cellphone reception may be spotty at-best.

Sirens are absolutely necessary. Homeless people are already so vulnerable being without shelter and having few resources. People who go out camping are also extremely vulnerable and are prone to letting the time get away from them and turning off their phones. People who live in tornado-prone areas also get a ton of alerts that don't apply to them or they don't need/want so they silence their phones. When the sirens come on, you know it's about to go down for real. (Unless the sirens fail to turn on like they did here when three whole tornadoes came rolling through town...)

whoever said tornado sirens are redundant are, for a lack of better term, stupid. sorry, but like you said, if you’re sleeping or have your phone on silent, or even if you don’t have a radio, a siren is a good way to be alerted. it sends the simple yet effective message of “take shelter now, tornado coming.”

The Whelen WPS-2905 and WPS-2760 whoop sirens are the absolute best. :)

It’s so scary because during z tornado watch or warning mostly in warning because if there is a tornado on ground they are sounding it’s so scary with lighting and thunder and the dark cloud but then you hear the siren like it’s creepy
