WOW, just the opposite of what me endocrinologist and diabetic pharmacist have told me. I'm still at a loss as to how a 90% GFR is so bad for a 68yr old diabetic who trains with weights. The creatine monohydrate actually helps with my glucose levels and I feel much stronger when I use it. Thanks so much.

If, it retains h2o and you may, get one more rep. Is it worth it? No, not to me I'm good w my aminos and protein. Strong as a bull like 315lbs for 7-8 reps.

I was about 67 when I first tried creatine and I got a lot more out of it. My strength went up a lot in a short time. The older you are the more it can help you. My daughter who is in her late 40s broke her foot and she went back to work after it healed. But she was having trouble with the muscles in her foot after she did. So I told her to take some creatine for a week or so. I called her back in a week and asker her how it was going. She told me that it worked in 3 days. Don't knock it until you try it out. As we age our body doesn't make as much as it use to when we were younger. So the older you are the more it can help. Of course I'm not a couch potato I still exercise I now 73 and will be 74 in less than 5 weeks.

Higher Creatinin alone in blood is not "disease". It can be higher from high intake of protein and muscle damage , also from hard training. It matter on level of urea in blood , protein in urine and GF if you have kidney damage........ many young sportler have increased level of Creatinin up to 200 and have your kindeys ok,

Incredibly helpful. I know this is a diet focused channel but I would love more (science based) information on the fitness side also. Particularly on how fitness and diet fit together.

How does fitness health fit into kidney health? Does fitness health affect how effective my diet is? Are there specific fitness activities that help kidney health (cardio vs weight training)?

In any case, very nice video. Thank you.

I have watched with great interest quite a few of your videos. Having had a kidney removed about 5 years ago my question concerns in what way do all of your recommendations apply to me. I don't recall ever hearing any reference to people having only 1 kidney and how they might benefit from the information you provide.

I’m a 62yr old bodybuilder who had amazing gains with creatine!Unfortunately my cholesterol went thru the roof&my specialist dermatologist took me off it straight away saying it’s going to be banned soon because it ruins your kidneys!Im also taking prescribed medication (Roacutain)for sever adult acne, which may have interacted with the creatine! What Im saying is,speak to your doctor first before taking this supplement!Because all these so called studies have been carried out by the companies that produce it!&most of the so called experts are in fact paid in one way or another by these big pharma corporations! So be very careful in what you see on you tube!

I cant thank you enough for putting this content out. I too have always thought taking creatine was bad for my kidneys. Or kidney I shall say. With CKD I have found very little content on how to gain muscle, and recover without large amounts of protein and creatine. With all of that being said. EAA'S what is your take on these vs. protein? Also can you take Vegan or plant based protein ? Or does that have the same exact affect on your kidney function? CKD is a tricky thing. I was instructed to go to the gym by my dr. to lower my BP. LOL. Yeah I am too competitive to do just that. I have to push it to the limits. Anything worth doing I go full speed ahead. Also what's your take on sauna bathing? I have found doing that the last two years as well as eating more clean, to be beneficial. I am not saying that I beat CKD however my levels are definitely better and am no longer considered to be in stage 3. BP is almost perfect as well. I do sauna bathing approx. 3-4 times a week for 20 mins. Thanks in advance for any response you may give.

With all due respect, the so called "Doctor" is not listening to the question. He is answering totally different question. The question he is answering: Is creatine dangerous to your kidney? The question that was asked: Can people WITH KIDNEY DISEASE take creatine. The answer for that question is NO, they cannot.

I don't understand what these people are talking . Your kidneys are always under high stress. Your kidneys get damaged because you always eat too much salt or sugar. And by taking extra creatine, you force the kidneys to convert more protein into ammonia and excrete the excess. Kidney cells have a great mechanism to repair themselves and this extra creatine you load up upsets the whole balance and causes loss of function.

It IS a thorny problem that universally, lab work outside of seeing a nephrologist measures ESTIMATED GFR using your creatinine value - which is simply the metabolic end result of the body's natural creatine which is eliminated by the kidneys at a rate understood to be constant in the population relative to AGE. Taking creatine supplementation therefore adulterates the test by artificially influencing the value being measured - creatinine. It appears your kidneys are filtering less IF creatinine goes UP, but in fact you can make it go up by taking the biochemical precursor to it - creatine. Put another way, the "E" in EGFR on that lab work stands for "estimated" whereas getting to actual GFR or "measured" GFR is harder. One tool, though not an infallible one, is getting the less common assay for cystatin-C which is not influenced creatinine levels. (This is recommended in Up To Date i.e., reference database for doctors.) I found my doctor completely intractable at this point; he is utterly convinced that EGFR = the direct assay of kidney filtration or at least, it's enough for him. He lost his mind when my creatinine went up 30 points while taking creatine. I stopped BECAUSE the scientific literature I read indicates that people like me with age-related, pre-existing decline in kidney function MAY BE nevertheless unwise to take creatine because it is unclear whether exogenous creatine is as benign substance for the subset of people with chronic kidney "disease" (CKD) as it is for someone without it. I would love to go to nephrology and dig into it but of course they typically don't give a shit about healthy athletes; they only treat people on the verge of dialysis or worse so I'm NOT getting that referral. If anyone with a medical background can speak to this, GO. (I am 58, BMI of 24, 7% BF, no health issues except what magically appears if I take creatine and magically goes away when I stop.)

You aren't addressing the specific demographic of elderly, but BUN going up is a problem for elderly, many of whom have common age-related CKD. That's why they often put some nutritional protein limits on the diets of elderly folks. Bottom line, taking creatine, especially at the doses advised for those doing strength training ultimately amounts to a net increase in load on the kidneys...i.e. makes them have to work harder. Maybe this isn't an issue with the younger elderly (65-75 approx), but over that age and given other medical issues they may have, I don't think anyone on ytube is accurately portraying the risks for the elderly. Especially if one has had a stroke that may have caused dysphagia and made it more difficult for the person to swallow liquids. The increased hydration needs when on creatine would further compound this issue as a marked increase in water is necessary when taking it. Simply put, if your kidneys have to metabolize it (which they do with creatine) the older you are and the more trouble you have staying hydrated and drinking enough water, etc., the more careful you have to be. As yet there are no dosing recommendations for the older elderly, especially those with CKD 3 (which a common level of CKD in those 80 and over...considered normal for that age group). Kidney function decreases with age.

This doctor didnt answer the question. I have ckd 3b. CREATINE, increased my creatinine levels and thus showed a drop in my Egfr to point that i didnt continue, i dont wanna know of the damage is acute or irreversable. More decline in kidney means i fall in stage 4 and im not going there.
Kidneys have to clear Creatine, it outs pressure on kidneys. If you healthy , no problem go for it. If you ahve slight kidney issues and Ckd, answer is no.
