I feel your pain, had a race from Clearwater to key west had around 8-12 knots of wind, just off of a beat, from the start at noon till the next morning around 9-10 am, then it dropped down to about 3-5 knots until just after noon. Then the wind dropped to nothing for the next 12 hours, from 24 hours into the race to 36 hours, and during that time we had almost made it into the outskirts of the Gulfstream, which was sending us backwards, and inland towards shallow water, since we draw nearly 8', at 7'10". So in the middle if a race, we had to throw out the anchor to keep from losing ground. As the wind began to pick up it was a nasty squall, and the waves picked up to a steep 6-8 ft seas, that were coming at us at about a 70° angle off our bow and starboard side. Well the wind kicked up to about 18-25, we out in a small reef, and threw up our biggest number 3, and hiked hard on the rail and went hard that way, as the storm came up and began to shift the wind to a broad reach, so at first we did a quick peel from the number three to number 1 for max speed since now off the wind, but didn't want to take the reef out because we had to play the main at the top off each wave or wed nearly roll out. Then the wind kept coming around so we then threw up the biggest code zero we have for about 5 minutes and realized we could just about handle our biggest chute, since the wind was fluctuating slide back another 5-8° but then would come back 5-8° but not more than that. So we did the code zero peel with the spinaker, and had now caught up to a Mumm 36,(phrf rating in the 30s) we were on a Tripp 33, (rating of 62, because we took a 9 second hit for putting on a mast head chute just for this race) hence why we risked it with the "BIG SCARY"( WE APPROPRIATELY DUBBED IT) gaining an extra 480sqft, on the spin and damn did it pay off.. we were able to hold our own with the Mumm that's built way lighter and for plaining, they were having trouble at the peaks of each waves crest, and rolled out so badly they dumped the mast head in the water, come to find out later their halyards locking clear had broken so they tied it with a bunch of half hitches and bowlines at the base of the mast, why even after a huge ease, had trouble dousing the chute to the code zero. That gave us a huge advantage and gassed it.. wed never gone over 18knits on that's boat but hit 24knots in a gust of 41knots and after we chabged course a bit and the waves came around to help... Was an awesome race but, my arms were smoked after triming the massive chute, even with a grinder on the winch for me... I knoentheyw ere getting worn out even as we rotated, because I played that chute all damn day, tryin to beat the Mumm boat for boat, they got us boat for boat but we corrected out big time... It's wild how you'll have to throw out an actor in mid race to not lose ground, to on the verge of disaster the last 8-10 hours....

Also raced on Spars and Stripes, the old Americas, Americas cup 60' catamaran, and set the riced from Clearwater to key west, under 12 hours, we were literally on the bring of pitch poling and disaster the whole race, averaged just over 35knots, and was one hell of a race... Then the following year did key west regatta on Excess, Doug Fishers boat, a modified mini maxi, and our carbon fiber mast broke, and had to repair it over night, didn't have enough power in the keys, so we had to run taros over it and car heaters to speed it up the drying to race the following day, was in racing magazine years ago...

A beat in have wind will wear you out quick, not only from stress of safety, the sun and your feet and legs adjusting non stop from the wind and waves, but as you said, the most intense core workout non stop, hell even as you sleep your working out lol....
