Just to clarify a couple of things:

The depth of search that professional chess players make is an average (and I think it's closer to 5 - the more recent references have more precise estimates). In some game scenarios you could be looking ahead 10 moves or even 15. Also, depth is only one part of the equation, there's also breadth of search (how many game states you visit).

Also, my extremely short summary of AI programs neglected to talk about the knowledge they do have. Modern AI programs, as I understand it, have huge amounts of game "knowledge" -- that is, stored game states. But this is quite different, qualitatively, from human memory of the game, which involves considerably more abstraction.

😁 My husband is a chess and go geek, and can recreate nearly any chess or go game he’s ever played. He’s got a spectacular memory… for that.
But can’t recall where he put his keys, whether he fed the horses, or the number of times he told me the same joke… 😜

I imagine YOU might also have the related issue: watching a tv show or movie, if there’s a chess board setup that appears for even a moment, it drives him nuts it’s if the arrangement of pieces on the board suggests the game isn’t “real.”
I’m the same way but with horses… or sometimes computer code…
It “breaks the fourth wall” when you see something your own expertise instantly perceived as fake. Like, it could be a show about aliens and no problem suspending disbelief… but a stupid arrangement of chess pieces? OH HELL NO. 😏
