Hoover is the worst I have ordered from. Lowest survival and low grown weight. 20 RIRs from Hoover 60 from a local. Didn't loss a single one from local. Hoover only 2 made a month old. If they was alone maybe I did something but 80 in same pen same feed same age to within 2 days

Make sure your chicks are vaccinated for Mareks. I learned an expensive lesson. Tractor Supply does not vaccinate.

I got 5 silver laced Wyandottes from Southern States and they’re doing great! They were on sale minus 15% of the price so $4.35 each.

It looked like you live in Grand Junction? Have you checked out Whiting Farms Hatchery? You can get Hens already laying for $10-$15. You do have to go pick them up in Delta, but they also have runs to various places if enough hens are ordered. Also, people might like to know that the hatcheries you mentioned usually throw in extra chicks when shipping. Thanks for the Tractor supply tip!

Rural King is the best place to pick up chicks. Always have a good variety, you can look them over to make sure they are healthy. And are reasonably priced. Many local feed mills will have them also. Tractor supply will have them on hand also. If they have too many lots of time they will make you a deal.

I have used Cackle and mcmurray for over 20 years . They are both about the same quality , but read reviews . mcmurrey has a couple breeds that are pretty low quality .
I have not vaccinated from either hatchery for the over 20 years of using them and no issues .
I got my order off 200 chicks from cackle hatchery in my cart . About another 150 of chicks and muscovies ready in their cart .
I need to make sure I get my new 84’x 40’ chicken coop finished before I order .
The 30’x40’ chicken coop finally got to small for the business I do.

Last winter, I ordered from Meyer and was pleased with the chicks and S&H was a deal if you get 15 after the winter season (March). Meyer allows you to choose any variety as other hatcheries may have a min of any type of 3-5, normally I get 2 of each. Working toward hatching a flock of White Plymouth Rock like grandma had when I was a small boy.. I got CornishX in June from TSC and grew out the Ross-308 to butcher weight.. TSC has a great price but most people really do not want all 10 the same and I'm not impressed with to package deals as its too random, you get whatever they send you as its discounted for the mass retailer.. Not planning to buy chicks until my freezer gets low, Reichs Poultry Farm in PA is my go-To for Freedom Ranger, very good quality chickens.

I order from Meyer hatchery and I don't live that far, I take a few hours out of my day and go pick them up. It's less stressful on them and I know they are not getting tossed around

You should have used 15 birds for your comparison. The last 5 birds at Cackle was about $1 each because you won't pay that small order fee.

Calculating costs, I'd always total ALL costs: Small Order, Shipping, Taxes, Etc, and THEN compute the real cost per chicken. I.e, a $4.25 chicken can easily end up to Really costs $10.00 or more each.

"Free Shipping" is never really FREE; the cost has just been rolled into the item price. And, I'm always cautious if a price seems to be too low.

Why get them vaccinated? I feel like that's highly unnecessary, especially for backyard chickens. Farmers didn't do that back in the day and they were perfectly fine.
