I don't believe the Quinn's hired a hitman to find Joe. Joe has already shown he's an unreliable narrator. My theory is that he DID meet a man to get a new identity, but Joe added the extra delusion that he's a hitman blackmailing him to kill Marienne. It's part of the good side of his identity at war with himself & the big bad world, trying to justify his actions.

I PERSONALLY DONT BELIEVE THIS but I just thought that they could give the show a huge final twist. Ever since Joe had been hit in the head with a mallet by Beck in season 1 Joe has been dead and in fact he is in an eternal hell and by the end of season 4 he somehow takes control of his hell.
