The Creative Powers of a Free Civilization [What Would Hayek Say?]

What is the relation between freedom and civilization? In this week's "What Would Hayek Say?" we dive into Chapter 2 of Hayek's Constitution of Liberty to find the answer. Interestingly, one of the strongest cases for liberty is based on our ignorance. The moment we acknowledge this is the moment we can better appreciate how so many of the advancements we take for granted - our civilization itself - is the result not of an overarching design, but what Hayek would term a "spontaneous order". Decentralized decision making allows for a diverse range of experimentation to find solutions to problems. For Hayek, the urge to centralize and control human development should be resisted. If we knew how freedom would be used, then the case for it would largely disappear. Furthermore, the freedom to experiment and think differently must always be protected against common opinion that may be sceptical or downright hostile to new ideas; indeed, progress begins as the strange new ideas of a few people before being extended to everyone else.
