In Defense of the Wii U - 10 Years Later

If we didn't have the Wii U, we would've never had the Nintendo Switch.

Wii U game pad is still the most comfortable controller for man hands I have ever held.

Well. It was actually hamstringed by it's weak CPU and Ram bus, putting is slightly under par with the aging PS3/360 and a year out from the Xbox One and PS4. This was a poor choice in hardware selection. The lack of third party support came from the difficult nature to develop for. The fact that the Switch is only a slight upgrade from this is absolutely disgusting. Don't get me wrong. I still have a Wii U. I've purchased and sold two Switches. Nintendo just doesn't impress me anymore.

What is the game with a mini. Samus with a digit on the back ? (Before Smash Bros at the beginning and at 11’35")

In my opinion, the Wii U was a huge improvement over the Original Wii.

I love the Wii U for what it is. The switch? Yeah, it's handheld, but you can't do that while people are also playing on the tv. The Wii U was great for parties, especially nintendo land.
My gamepad's battery died (degraded) so I haven't been able to play it in years (don't really want to get a used one)

I really hope that personality is a feature Nintendo will add again to their next console🙏🏻

I remember when the PS4 and Xbox 1 came out…to me the Wii U felt more next gen than those systems because of the way you interact with the system.

ID Use my wii u if my gamepad wasnt broken. A New gamepad is just way to expensive. Its just a wii with hd output for me.

I’ve been playing WII U since I was 3 years old I’ve got millions of games on it. I just never wanted to get rid of it I alive it just do. If it runs out of date I’ll get the SD card and put it in my new one IF it’s out of data. WII U is my favourite console in the world, as you turn of the Wii u the music plays and if it’s your birthday it plays jingles and so many MII all over at there and I’m a massive fan of the WII U ... sadly I have no internet. :( at least I have great games especially Zelda. :)

Looking at the pikmin games and the polygon counts of objects in them, the Wii U could handle quite a lot of stuff without the slightest bit of lag.

Thanks for your amazing video! I always loved the wii u and as I kid I would go over to my friends’ house and play games like Nintendoland, and it was always a blast. I was thinking about getting one now that I’m older, and your video convinced me to get one! Thank you and I’m so excited to start playing this amazing console once again!

wii u is my nostalgia

I recently bought a Wii u and I'm having so much fun. This is a nice console for the whole family. I forgot how much fun multi player can be. I have a gaming PC and a PS4 , but the Wii u brings my family together .

I hate it when people act like the marketing was the whole reason why the Wii U failed, marketing was a major player in its failure but not the whole reason why. Besides a few notable titles the Wii U had one of the worst game libraries of all time. Also it was way to gimmicky, same with the Wii.

I really can't decide whether to get a switch oled or wii u.

My family all chipped in to buy me a Wii U for my birthday, and my brother (who was usually busy, I rarely got to spend time with him) played Pikmin 3 with me for most of the day. That memory alone makes the Wii U worth it for me.

The irony is that nintendo stopped the virtual shop and with 90% of first party games ported for Switch wii U i just like some relic from the lost time. Shame because this was the ultimate retro capable of playing all nintendo catalog and some of the third party games were best versions across all platforms. Like batman armored edition. And pro controller was maybe the best controller ever made - extremelly long battery life and very comfortable.

it's hard to not to be biased over the wii u if it was your first console.
I myself respect the wii u more than love it because it was the failure of the system that made Nintendo learn from there mistakes to create the Nintendo switch.
What I will say though is the wii u has some amazing games and it's a beast of a machine once you mod it.

I really believe the Wii U was an extremely under-rated system, and was a unique thing at its time. I originally bought one for my girlfriend as she is more of a fan of Nintendo games then the more hardcore PC or Xbox titles. The console saw so much play in our house. When one of us was watching netflix, the other would be right there beside the other on the couch playing mario kart or smash. It was such a convenient thing to have its own screen and felt like a really powerful gameboy.

Play your Wii U and 3ds! Hi all! If you love the Wii U and 3ds please PLAY them daily or at least weekly because your play data is still given to Nintendo. If we all play our systems regularly Nintendo will at least know how much this wonderful community of ours loves the Wii U and 3ds. This is one great thing we can all do easily to support the systems we love! Spread this message to as many people as you can so our big happy Wii U and 3ds family has fun forever! I love the Wii U and will always defend it. In a world where everyone is against 'hate' culture its always funny that people feel free to slam the Wii U whenever they want without understanding it. And if they say they do understand it it only takes a couple questions to find out they are lying and never owned or really played one. All the haters hop on board the sheep train, you're herd is leaving! As for everyone else who actually owned and loved their Wii U don't be afraid to be different because you're not alone. Just my thoughts thank you all. :)

I agree with you there the wii u was so underrated I still play my wii u still to this day great video the wii u had great games like bayonetta 2 and Mario kart 8 and super Mario maker it's good to know that it is people out there who enjoyed playing wii u and appreciate just as much as I did too 🔥🔥🔥👍💯

I decided to take the liberty of making a comment about how much I enjoy the Wii U itself.

By far, my favorite game is Super Smash Bros., but there are some others I like quite a bit, including Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Party 10, and New Super Mario Bros. U. All of these are Mario games, which I am a big fan of.

The backwards compatibility with the Wii is a big highlight. With that, I have a bigger selection of games to enjoy, including both of the PokéParks, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Sonic Colors, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Super Sluggers, Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, and Super Mario Galaxy.

Of note is the sense of color and whimsy. I feel like Nintendo is at its best when it embraces a lighthearted atmosphere. Sure, in retrospect many of the ads for Wii U are cringe, but I have a soft spot for things like that. Miiverse was a brilliant disaster of a social media community that I look back on fondly. Not to mention that even the options setting has colorful sections and nice ambient music.

One thing that can be seen as a point of contention is how Mario games were handled on Wii U. It and the 3DS era are often seen as the darkest period in the franchise due to a heavier focus on simplicity and less overall ambition or charm. Being a Super Mario nerd, I see the merit on that belief, but...I don't hate the Wii U generation. I won't go on for too long -- that would open up its own can of worms -- but rest assured that I have gotten more than my share of enjoyment from Nintendo's flagship series.

I feel like Virtual Console was at its strongest on Wii U. The Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and DS games all came complete with their original manuals, and the UI on the GamePad when setting up controls or looking at manuals was pleasant. It was through VC that I got Kirby's Return to Dream Land, which is my second favorite game in the Kirby franchise. Other games I got into are Kirby Squeak Squad, Super Mario Advance 4, and Mario Kart: Super Circuit.

Altogether, the Wii U is a marvelous machine. While Smash alone keeps me a fan of the system, its selection of first-party software and whimsical air keeps me from hating it. Yes, this even factors in stinkers such as Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. The Wii U era is one that I look back on fondly.

Lately I’ve been buying more on the Wii U and 3DS eShops than I’ve ever bought successively before. Diving into these consoles and stacking up new games for them has given me massive appreciation for their eras as something unique from Switch
