Honestly, the x1 is kinda a joke. I was at a BMW event, and test drive it for “fun” since it was the last car available. Coming from an x5, the x1 feels substantially cheaper inside, the ride wasn’t smooth at all, the acceleration wasn’t that bad but wasn’t good either. From that, I figured that the only people buying an x1 are those that really want a smaller vehicle, want to be seen in bmw, but can’t necessarily afford an x3.

GREETINGS FROM ENGLAND. We have the X1 in many engine variants. We also have the BMW Active Tourer which has not made it to the USA but shares the same platform as the new X1 , has the same interior as the new X1 but ride height is between a 2 series sedan and the X1. Best part is the hybrid 1.5 litre petrol engine and the electric engine which work in perfect harmony - 170hp is adequate and the Active Tourer is typically $5000 cheaper than the X1. Check out the UK reviews on You Tube.

I bought a 2023 X1. There is hesitation in starting from a stop sometimes. It’s not a big problem. On a washboard you’ll get a rigorous massage, even with 18” wheels. (On the same washboard, my Venza hardly notices it.) The menu system is way too complicated, but once you have it set up you can live with it. The built-in navigation map isn’t useful. The back-up safety warning is too subdued. But the car’s ability to automatically back you out of a tight parking place is a delight. By and large a delightful vehicle.

this is for those who only care about buying things just because of the brand. Those who go to a shop known for luxury handbags and buys the cheapest wallet or belt just for the brand, those who go to a restaurant known for steak and orders a drink and a salad just so you can post it up on tiktok. That's who this car's for

Rented this car out of curiosity. This is a very accurate review. The delay is awful even without start stop to merge or accelerate quickly. Steering is so vague it makes the 2.28i I rented feel like a M3. Linear throttle response that comes with BMWs is nonexistent. And due to wireless only carplay it can crap out on you and glitch out if the phone heats up a bit. Usb only carplay is always more reliable. And the fan is absurd with a lack of granularity. Low is Japanese strong and very low is a sea breeze at best.

But as a box it holds a lot.

I just had one of these for 3 days while my old BMW was in for major servicing. The driver assist systems of suprise braking and interfering with the steering all the time spoils the driving experience and is so dangerous. I got hooted at several times by other drivers when it braked tested them suddenly for no reason especially on corner exit if i put the power down early, the car starts braking by itself surprising the car behind. The big touch screen has way too much functionality you spend too much time looking at the screen searching the sub menus that your eyes are not looking at the road. If I bought one, either I would crash it not watching the road or the driver assist would cause a crash within a few weeks. After 20 years of buying BMWs I wont buy another one if it has any of this driver assist tech or that touch screen. Far too dangerous a car to risk my family's life in it.

Is it better to for an x3 even if the gen hasn't changed yet? I'm thinking to change the order of the x1 for a x3 instead

What in the world are they doing with the auto start/stop here that it's so bad? Except for the rare case where I take off right when the car thinks I'm coming to a full stop, it's surprisingly quite excellent in my X3 M40, to the point where I actually use it most days.

I test drove an older version of this car. In the US, seems these are made to lease – and when that lease is up, most people won’t want to keep it.

Savage Geese has a bias against BMW; he seems to find them too perfect and therefor boringly predictable. But that's not necessarily a bad thing in a car. I'd turn the stop/start off. There's good power and gas mileage and BMW interiors look they are for adults. Front wheel drive bias is not for everyone, but some prefer it over being pushed by a sliding rear end.

This isn't a performance car but will have all of BMW's typical reliability hallmarks. Or you can buy a Toyota or a Lexus product which will also not be a performance car and they will have their reliability hallmarks.
This car is for the ignorant.

Hello everyone,
Am curious how many out there like the center console. I found it totally lacking in ergonomics and practicality and with zero depth under the cover. Am older and maybe set in my ways but never in a thousand years would I buy a car with only screen control for AC/ heat...tap tap look. I want to drive a car not a smart phone( I have 2)..

Guys, you’re missing the point. This is not a small SUV….its meant to be driven in an urban environment… and then it maken sense. You cannot compare this car to a 3 series….in Europe it is driven in compact streets in cities… it sits in traffic jams…that is why hybrids (much smoother , and the 28i is not a car that sells in large volumes in Europe) and the iX1 will outsell the petrol variant. Petrol is dirt cheap in the US… When you don’t abuse the car, its a nice vehicle, suitably post.

Hello guys! Just had a testdrive (in Europe) of the xdrive20d mildhybrid and the xdrive23i. I think indeed there are some refinement issues with the transmission in the petrol, a bit jerky sometimes at lower speeds (not such a big problem for the everyday driver), but the mildhybrid diesel is a very very refined drivetrain. As of 2023, at least in Europe, I don t think you can get a more refined compact premium suv than the new x1. Diesels are very sweet going. Sound insulation is also very good, on par with a g20 3 series.

I had the same issue with my VW Tiguan 2.0T 220ps - you try to start moving by flooring the pedal and nothing is going on for 3 seconds. There were some others annoying matters with DSG and rear suspension comfort so I eventually sold it with 10K on odometer and bought a low-mileage E84 X1 28x again. Now I'm having fun. Every day, every second!

I completely agree! I have been saying this since even the last generation, it feels too unrefined. The lag, the torque steer, the stiff and uncomfortable suspension, the lack of handling, I preferred the Audi and Mercedes since this thing was released in 2016. This is what happens when you make a BMW out of a Mini- which is literally an econobox in most of the world.

I have over 4,000 miles on my 23 x1 so far. The auto start stop is truly terrible. Good thing for me it’s a company car and I’ll bring say bye to it once I hit 30,000 miles.
