Russel Crowe is a strange cove in my opinion, but when he gets the acting right in certain films he gets it RIGHT!

The days when men were as hard as the wood of their ships. What happened to all the heroes? David Soul was right in "Magnum Force" - "All our heroes are dead".

There is no scene in this movie that doesn't make me want to watch the entire thing.

"His boy, God forbid?" The thing is, he meant that. Says a lot about the man. No hate. Just war.

This was an excellent movie. I wanted a second one as soon as the first ended. The second film would have been great if it was from the French perspective.

The subterfuge was the lesser of two weevils.

This is not only a criminally underrated movie, but a stellar example of how you can stick to historical accuracy and make a wildly entertaining movie

They missed the opportunity to come around behind her in the dark while she was chasing the decoy, they could have raked her stern in the dark, unseen until they fired.

Read most of Patrick O’Brien books. Fantastic stuff, works of fiction, but inspired in real events of time when England, France and Spain were at war with each other. Captain Aubrey somehow is made the main character in all those historical events

Absolutely love this movie. Can't even count how many times over the years I've watched it, and I've never gotten bored. It's not even the action that draws me in but rather the fascinating glimpses of everyday naval life and living on a cramp ship. I served on two floats while active duty in the Marines from '85-93 so I can relate despite the difference in era, creature comforts, and technology.

A sequel to this film would absolutely eviscerate the box office if released. Men just want to watch classic yarns with strong moral underpinnings at their centre. No superhero/Marvel film comes close to this for adventure and spirit.

That's one hell of a first command.

I watched this film on a ferry, crossing the North Sea on a January night. The rise and fall of the deck really added to the experience.

After reading (so far) ten of the novels on which this movie is based...the movie gets EVEN BETTER.

I always wished there had been a sequel to this movie.. Always loved that image of the ship rising over the horizon.

To use and over-used word, what amazes me about this is that the Surprise is a small 5th rate, but I am still impressed by her size. The ship chasing, the Acheron, is a 4th rate. Both smaller square riggers, but both impressive in scale.

There was a plump fat boy where I worked name of John Thurman. When he started raving about this flick I knew it was near zero next to "Mutiny on the Bounty" 1962.

This might be my all time favorite movie. Just a fantastic adventure. After seeing this I bought the entire book series and over the next few years read it through three times.

A really entertaining and well done bit of cinema.

I always thought his English accent was a bit ropey in this, but passable. And then he tried to do a Nottingham accent for Robin Hood when he played him. Robin was almost certainly not from Nottingham, nor was he a peasant. Russell Crowe's family were probably deported to Australia for not being very good at English accents, his being so bad as to warrant redeporting him.

Ok, now I know which movie I'm watching next, for like the 30th time.

Not half as good as the books (about 24 of them and, with Hornblower, the best naval novels) but still good and this could have run and run as a series of films

Master and Commander was a superb movie deserving many sequels, just like the books, but sadly no sequels were made.

"Master"-ful movie, Commander; one of the best of the genre. Love every damned bit of it: dialog, characters, ship, sea, music, costumes, sound effects, command of the details -- everything! 😍

now i gotta pull my BR version off the shelf and give it a watch!

That fkin score when the Ascaron looks like it was glowing wings (extra sails), so frigging cool.

Such a shame they cast Russell Crowe in this. Such an unconvincing performance.

How tough and hardy were those Sailors. They deserve to be remembered for their bravery and seamanship.

Question: I've read a number of books on the Age of Nelson, but tend to shy away from novels. So, just how accurate are O'Brien's books? If I can learn more about the period, yet enjoy a good story...
