Even though nearly all of Aristotle's scientific theories were eventually proven wrong, people don't call him an idiot, because his specific theories weren't why he was important. The same should probably go for Freud.

One of the most important achievements we see from Dr. Freud in his 'On the Interpretation of Dreams' are detailed case study after case study demonstrating that there is an Id, Ego, and Super-Ego, and that the conscious Ego is a censor, a no-sayer, and forbidder of thoughts and brain-storming. In so many cases, dreams are not sleeping fantasies, but parts of the mind, the Id and Super-Ego speaking to each other in poetic and metaphorical code the Ego or conscious censor actually doesn't understand; and thus coming to new understandings. The science is very solid and demonstrated in aforementioned book of psychology; very influential and simply underrated today. In the height of Freudian and Jungian analysis, even after Freud's physical demise, the smart, busy, and well-to-do along with other lunatics, were interested and paid to be involved in psychological therapy and science. Too often, psychology and psychiatry today is overmedicating, warehousing, and doing nothing anybody with a career and a life wants much involvement in. But we're changing that; and much of what we need to do is simply rediscover the old Psychological Master Dr. Sigmund Freud and his books.

Freud merely summarized the psychoanalytic practice of these people in theories. This is similar to certain geometric rules that the West stole from the Arabs.

I think the real breakthrough by Freud was the clinical process and setting.. Which is why I’m a little uncomfortable with modern psychiatry that relies much more on chemical solutions and less on psychotherapy..

sexual abuse is real, and apparently although some of Freud's theories were brilliant and he is the Father of Modern Psychology, he had some major misconceptions about his patients as well. nobody is perfect, and psychoanalysis should not be completely thrown out; just the rotten parts of it. most sexual abuse is real, and the subconscious was never meant to be integrated with the Superego as Jung believed. most that is rotten in us is buried in the subconscious mind for a reason. it isn't intended to be dug up and brought back to life like a Frankenstein monster.

The thing about Freud is that it isn't important that his theory wasn't perfect. They rarely are even in "hard sciences" like physics. What's important is that he introduced a whole new science and attempted to discover a mysterious world of mind that hadn't been previously considered to be touchable in this sense. He laid down the groundwork and a lot of terminology for the future generations of psychology. And to mock him for his theories is easy with hindsight and benefit of having the hard road laid out for a century, to start creating this abstract concept to begin with must have demanded a lot more than the mockery requires.
