Wow. I was so surprised about your test. Also, I live in a much dryer climate than you and I never have Aspen mold. However I have have some more moist substrates mold.

Where I live its Hot Humid Summer's, and Cold Dry winters! I usually use Aspen in Summer, and Coconut Based Substrate in Winters which helps keep Humidity up in Dry conditions!

I used paper towels or newspaper except when I got my corn snake in 2003(which I had to regime to a good friend 😕 had to move); I had him for several years from a baby to 4 feet long. I used a substrate from LLL Reptile once he turned a year old. Wish I remembered what it was😕😜🤔
