I WILL REDO THIS COMMENT later cuz IT’s messy cuz I’m voice typing:
Literally, I’m doing pre-calculus right now and when I really look at it, it’s really not that hard like to understand and do but the way my teacher teaches it makes it hard in the way. Like he kind of tries to like make us do the work, even before he really teaches it, and stuff like that to prepare us for college or whatever. But like it’ll be like one day before the test and I’ll feel confident and then all of a sudden I’m studying and I just found out a rule that I never knew before to use a formula and I feel like I feel dumb because I feel like I’m missing pieces of the puzzle I thought I was placing correctly. So I feel dumb because I feel like I’m paying attention during class but suddenly I’m hearing about something I swear I never heard before. So then I question if I’m even paying attention in the class because I swear he never mentioned a certain way to do something. He says se should leave class understanding it but seriously sometimes it’s just not EXPLAINED he doesn’t explain things but I know if he did explain it like a normal teacher would that the class wouldn’t even be that hard so now I’m just confused about if my subjects are even that hard in general.. so it’s just hard and he’s so oddly strict like most of the others r chill but I’m just gonna have to fight through it I guess.

My issue with math is that a lot of people just want us to cram everything without any explanation and logic, im the “the asking too much questions ” type of person and maybe sometimes im just dumb not grasping anything, when ever i question what happened in this step or how did you get here i get, didn’t you study math in high school?

As a former math tutor and former math major myself, I think your tip is the right way to go about it.

I personally have always been thinking like this. For most problems I try to build a mental map of the solution, so that I have an idea of what I need. The thing is, I find it hard to do sometimes. So instead, I take it step by step. I work my way backwards from what I want to find, step by step, and in doing so I identify the things I need to find, and then I can work on it, one step at a time. E.g, find the critical points: critical points are when the derivative is 0 --> find when the derivative is zero to solve my problem---> I need the derivative to find when the derivative is zero ---> my problem is now reduced to: find the derivative ---> Differentiate the function and obtain its derivative. At this point I can stop regressing and I can solve the problem by running my map backwards. So by working backwards, I've reduced the problem to a previously solved case.

I've also found that, when tutoring, many students think of math as a recipe book, where you have a list of problem types, and a set of algorithms to solve them, and you just run these algorithms. Because they've never really been taught how to do that, they never question why the algorithms work, or worse yet, if they do, they quickly realize that there are many cracks in what they know, and they brush it under the carpet, thinking that math is an inconsistent mess that they'll never really understand and that they should just apply the god-given rules blindly. Not even engineers can get away with this kind of thinking in high school although I guess engineers and physicists do get away with this in college and the professional world. Math is a bold, beautiful field that can pride itself on probably being the only human endeavor to be 100% consistent. Students can and should be as nitpicky as possible: some guy, probably Cauchy, already thought of the logical fallacy and patched it up. But in this way, by mapping out a solution beforehand, or by going step by step backwards. you develop a logic. Now you should no longer view math as cookbook recipes, but rather as a logical entity, because in your mind, you understand the logical path from point A to B, the one that constructs this so called algorithm.

funny enough, I already studied like that because I always looked at the answer and walking steps backwards until i understood the concept, before even attempting to solve the equation outright, it always felt like cheating and like I didn't actually accomplish anything. So i started avoiding my math homework until it got to the point where i missed so much information, that understanding anything now is frustrating and exhausting.

Math is not difficult if you are good with solving problems. You will need a lot of practice and memorization of formulations. You can advance on your own by just reading the math textbook. This is how I learned because I couldn’t make to math class lessons in the morning because of work and staying up late playing videos games. I only show up 5-10 minutes for home work, quiz and test days. If anyone is in the same situation as me. You can still pass. It feels really good to self taught and solve those problems on your own. Good luck

I don't like the idea of just giving up while solving math problems. I think it's better to normalise getting stuck and give your brain some time to think hard, even if your answer is wrong. This way you train your brain to think critically on such a problem. It's similar to lifting weights. Mathematicians or entrepreneurs don't solve their problems by looking on their answer sheet right? They think hard and of course it would take weeks, even months at first. But as you get used to think hard, your problem solving skill will develop and you solve problem faster. Intead of just giving up, think about what concepts you haven't familiar on a problem, analyze it, search for explanations on the internet. If you can't find any possibilities to solve it, that's when you can go to see the answer and learn it.

Math was like a Boogie Man to me growing up.
I couldn't grasp the formulas with strange usually letters or other symbols. Calculus concepts finally made sense because of the realization of infinitely tiny measurements or quantities which is best described in automotive piston to cylinder wall measurement which is the limit. I'm a visual person.
