That was the Founding Titan awakening in him and he didn't even realize it. The purple eyes and all. Which means the original studio did intend to keep the founder's eyes purple whilst hinting at it THIS early on!! Even in the episode that just released, he says exactly what he did in this scene; right before making landfall at Marley.... Holy shit....

While watching it, I was confused why there were 2 voices of eren simultaneously playing, but after final chapter, I guess it's clear

Eren very nearly had her, this early in the anime. Looking at her OVAs, and lore in season 4, I realise that she didn't event want to be fighting inside the walls as a warrior, that she didn't have a choice.. but this is still Eren's most badass moment. When I watched this fight, I was in awe, and desperate for Annie to die.

Now my attitude towards them both is hugely different. I anxiously await the final part.
