Sounds like Golden Age all this, now shining way less at many points of "view" (less so "hearing-wise" as far as opera singers, I tend to be conciliating because I adore well trained lyrical voices).

Marilyn Horne has always been one of my favourite singers. She was able to sing popular songs, operetta, dramatic mezzo/contralto and bel canto so, so beautifully - just superb. If you get a chance, try and find her opera arias album from 1981 with Claudio Scimone. I know it by heart.

Marilyn's range is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL...!!! She is in my opinion THE VERY BEST mezzo opera has or will ever see. Although i must say i love Elina Garanca. She is truly something special.

The TRIFECTA as i like too call them. Marilyn, Joan, and Pavarotti. They ALL were the very best of their era and beyond for quite some time. But when Joan and Marilyn sung they had something very special together.

At 11'30" she talks about her duet-singing skills, and you absolutely hear and see her doing those things in all those wonderful duets with Sutherland. Also, all those skills she possessed of imitation, and technical facility, were assisted by great intelligence, because you just can't do what she did without it.

I heard her sing a recital in summer of 1994 at Ravinia, as part of the MH Foundation, and she was simply amazing. I got to attend a masterclass, and she knew EXACTLY what each person needed....best famous singer teacher I've seen! As a younger vocal student, I particularly remember in her recital the different voices she used in "Death and the Maiden", each a distinct character but still actual singing, not cartoonish or caricature. I cried continually through the concert as she kept moving me with her art, and when I met her, I couldn't really speak....I was still crying!

Sutherland Gone. Ramey Gone. Levine gone. And Horne will be 90 next year. Jackie's was the first opera singer I saw, live, as a young singer in high school. (Met Carmen, on tour 1970's) Sad to learn this film was released already over 25 years ago. And sad to realize as I now myself have sung professionally for over 30 years, I no longer care for that swallowed, muscled tone, as I once did. And not a mention of Vennard, who she studied with, before Lewis messed it up. Live and learn.

I sat in the front row at the Kennedy Center to hear Marilyn Horne. I've loved music, especially opera since I was a little girl, and I could not get over her breath control ~ I actually saw her diaphragm move. She was wonderful and I really enjoyed this documentary.

I adore her, and not just because of the voice. She's so "normal" while being so extraordinary. And intelligent, and funny, and likable. I was drawn to Pavarotti first, in the early 70s, who opened my ears to Sutherland (the greatest voice/singer in all of operative history) who opened my ears to Horne. I cannot overstate how much joy these three have given me.
