Gukesh’s victory was no fluke, but well-deserved. He worked hard for it over many years. Most of all, he had a burning ambition to be the world chess champion. Whatever coaching he received on developing the mental strength for it, he certainly seems to have internalized it. That was apparent in his demeanor and speech after his world champion victory in Singapore.

Gukesh’s teachers at the school that he attended in Chennai, India, describe him as a very quiet and polite kid. Germans will be happy to know that he received a Mercedes Benz car as a gift from his school, for his World Chess Championship victory!

He’s also very humble. During his speech upon receiving the World Champion trophy in Singapore, he even thanked god, for guiding him with the right solution, when he sought the right answer. Quite unusual for a teenager! Even in victory, he praised his Chinese opponent and didn’t talk about himself as the ‘greatest’. He expressed his gratitude to his parents ( his father who’s an ENT doctor put his own career on the back burner to focus on Gukesh’s chess training and tournaments; his mom is a microbiologist who kept the lights on at his house) and his coaches, including the chess academy set up by 5-time world champion, Vishwanathan Anand. He even thanked his fans, whom he had never met before, who would bring him special blessed articles from temples in India. Amazing to hear that acknowledgement!
