They didn't break that shaft by looking at it, that's for sure... I suspect it got run off a trailer ramp or something like that.

I can tell you how that got broken….. The wheel was swiveled 90 degrees and hit the edge they were milling. The wheel could not get straight and broke the shaft.

Nothing wrong with more-or-less bench work in nice weather once in a while.

WOW, that had to be a lot of weight to sheer that diameter shaft off. Nice rebuild.

Whenever I use a press and get a lot of pressure on something I call it building a bomb and just wanted to say thanks read in one of the comments you answered I bought the 3m cubitron grinding disc and man are you right best ones I’ve ever used ended up ordering a whole box

It broke clean adjacent to the weld! A high stress area that doesn't tolerate high stress. Weld any type of metal, and it's compromised to some degree! Maybe a key, or even splines in this type of application would have been more suitable.

What a wheely good repair. I'd never get tired of watching stuff like this.

You could have used your forklift forks and rolled the wheel as you welded the shaft. But you got it done. Many ways to accomplish the job.

The shiny part of the break. I welded a brake chamber bracket on a steer axle of a fuel tank trailer. Six months later it broke off next to the weld so clean I could of but it back in place and re welded with a perfect matching fit.
Was talking with Freightliner about the uniqueness of the fracture, they said they had a tie rod end break the same way. Engineering came back with a harmonic vibration caused by disc brake. A few months later I had a brake noise in a drum brake, jack it up, rotate, it would sing. Removed inspected, re assembled, noise gone.
Visited with a CHP accident investigator as to that particular style of forensic failure. He gave me the scientific name, although he has never seen it. He cite the Bay Area earthquake 30 years ago stating that the mud flats in the Bay turned into glass.
The root cause was a harmonic vibration that melts material at a molecular level.

That got dropped , or fell of a trailer. In my opinion. .

nice job. thought about sitting the wheel on its side and then welding the alxe in. would of been a lot easier than trying to do all that vertical welding

Please keep us informed on how that Vevor FGY-50150 cylinder works out. The price is right at $115 but haven't used and abuse one yet .

A spacer sleeve on each side would keep it in the middle better than welding it. I think the welding adds stress into the axle.

Not compromised/destroyed in disassembly! To Quote; "bearing has a slight wobble"! I s because It is designed to self-center! It has to be or the bearing will fail It is a flanged 4 Bolt type. Why are saying we Quote; "should not put them back on there"! The shaft failed! right they also sell j!

Love the multi-purpose tape measure. I've been known to use one as a hammer, as well.

If you think those welds will last any longer than the old ones, you're dreaming. Sorry bud, you weld too cold. A guy with your limited skills should practice on flat first. Just stand it up next time. 3 passes minimum. You should practice with stick SMAW before you try MIG.

Is your repair shop in a residential neighborhood?

Because the shaft did not fit in the hole snuggly, it will work and break your weld. There is a tremendous load on that wheel.

This channel is my favorite welding channel. This is way cooler than pipelining

I can't say I've ever seen something shear just like that. Usually some twists or ridges, bumps, webs or something.

A really tough job LOL....

Bore it out for a 4" bar, turn down the ends of the bar to 3" over about 3/4" for added strength. It shouldn't break near as easily.
