Would never work with modern or thrash metal. You gotta get some flesh from the index finger in there. Scott Ian is the master of that shit. Hetfield uses the index & middle fingers!

good tip with picking is to completely ignore pitches and notes and group evens and odds and arrange them rhythmically and view it as a percussion exercise. The notes take care of themselves. Rhythm is the template in which notes occur. Have to be able to play the notes with precision.

Watching this, knowing Paul's philosophy on picking nowadays is hilarious. He'd most likely tell you to forget what he said in this video. Not about the tone part, but about "For fast things I prefer alternate picking"

Me make a lotta money.. Me call him to play guitar at my home. No one play like him, me can neve play like him.. He play with pick, no pick, with finger without finger. Me cant play with any pick or finger.. Me find better way to use my finger😂

Practice and then even more Practice , a Metronome or a steady beat helps a lot if you want to play fast then start off slow , use a slow Metronome setting get comfortable with it then gradually increase the BPM , and the most important thing never give up.

Just practice “Edge of 17” by Stevie Nicks over and over, talk about a marathon picking exercise! Used to see that late in the set some nights, had to concentrate like a monk! Lol Longest 4 minutes of the night!hahahahaha
