You should consider Adobe premiere, it's so much better.

You wanna know something funny? It's actually Win10 that's the reason for most of the crashes. While I get occasional crashes, using Win7 works just fine with SVP. I agree, though, use DaVinci Resolve or something.

It was my best editing software in 2008. Never crashed ! Then i needed to use it in 2017-2019, so much crashed, i never could make a render to the end the first time. Needed to retry rendering 4-5 times !

I'd say to go for either Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve (I've used Premiere for quite a few years now, definitely has it's issues from time to time, but still love it, works great with the rest of the adobe family, I've only briefly tried DaVinci Resolve, but I've heard great things...) But ofc at the end of the day, you're a busy guy so finding the time to actually look at new video editing software might not be the best thing:3 Also to be honest the old Windows 7 movie maker (that you can still download from some places) was pretty great, the encoding was shittier but fine if you just export at a higher bitrate, it's very simple but very easy to use as well, for the sort of videos where you just cut clips and put then together in a timeline it's completely fine & never really crashed on me... just a though while I'm drinking my morning coffee, have a nice day, greetings from Slovenia:3

I haven't gotten around to using Vegas, but I used Acid Pro and Sound Forge a lot many years ago and really loved the software. When Sonic Foundry was making the stuff, it worked well and they consistently improved it. Sony bought them out in 2003 and did continue to update the software, but did the bare minimum as far as I could tell, as I watched Acid Pro slowly become more and more outdated and feature-light compared to its competitors. I guess that's why they eventually gave up and sold to Magix.

Magix isn't necessarily a bad brand name, but their software portfolio mostly consists of consumer-grade, almost novelty-level software, like Magix Music Maker, stuff that sells more because it's under $100 than because it's robust, bug-free software. Now I have a feeling that since acquiring Vegas, they've done absolutely nothing with it other than apply their branding, while completely ignoring bug fixes and stuff like that, because that's how Acid Pro is. And while Acid Pro was still a good product 10 years ago, it also wasn't running on Windows 10, so no surprise there would be bugs running the outdated software on newer operating systems. I don't think Magix is interested in fixing anything or doing any real work on it at all as long as it "mostly" works.

First of all I never used Sony Vegas so i can't say anything about the app in particular. But i can say that an unresponsive window does not necessarily mean that the app crashed.

So my question is: Did it really crash? Or does it need time to save? Some applications 'hang' while it is actually performing an heavy task (on the main thread). Always give it a few minutes before killing a process. Even if windows shows a 'unresponsive apps' window. Give it time! There is a chance that it is actually doing something. (unless it got caught in a infinite loop -> bad programming).

btw: Errors like these can also occur when a network drive or a (usb) mass storage device is missing.

Find the program from start and right click\run in compatibility mode in the properties of that program and select the box. Also set that program to be your default viewer from settings, you may also run that program in admin by right clicking and run as admin.

just send a quick note to Linus. Tell him you need the best rig to run adobe premier. Ditch that antiquated trash Vegas, and you will save time with the proper set up to do the job you need done. Struggling on old hardware / software just to save a few bucks for a professional content creator (we can call you that now that you have 1mil subs) if a no win situation.

Most NLE's I know have problems with video shot with cell-phones. These phones all use variable framerates when encoding their files, which is fine for straight-forward playback but horrible for editing. Cell-phone footage needs to be transcoded to a constant frame-rate format. Just plain h264 or something other plain will do.
These NLE's also depend heavily on all kind of libraries of software which aren't developed by the developers of the NLE itself, like windows components, drivers etc. Any bug in these libraries might choke the NLE. But Í've got to admit, when a program just crashes or hangs, that indicates bad error handling and should not happen. It should at least give some kind of error indication instead of just crashing. But hey, that's how software is developed nowadays, just ship it out and let your customers send back crash reports to figure out the bugs. By the time Davinci Resolve has reached the age of this piece of software, it will also have become an unmanageable pile of bloated functionality.

I see all the comments here and I don't get it. With the right plug-ins which I have, I find Vegas Pro fantastic. I have edited 3 short films with it, won 4 film festival awards, and it so much simpler to use than Adobe (yes I have Adobe Premiere as well) Never had a issue with it from Vegas 15 on up. I have had Adobe crash on me as yes Vegas has crashed but I save everything every 2 minutes as I would think most of you should do as well. Any issues with Vegas typically is because of Windows, not the software. Everyone is going to have their issues and nobody is ever going to be 100 per cent happy because it does not do what "they" want it to do in "their" way. Simple fact with video editing software. For the record I been in broadcast editing since the analog days so I do know what I am talking about.
