Ok, so first of all, this is my personal opinion about something in this season overall. First i'd like to make it clear: in the LNs, Kumiko wins....so either they are going for a different ending, or they simply wanted to subvert the readers's expectations in this ep, but will most likely end up having the same next ep. Who knows what their intentions were.

Also, sorry for the long text. Bear with me LOL

But talking about smth here: i am totally aware that LN readers and part of the audience in general has been feeling this season is kinda...off somehow. Even the way they are not showing the performances bothers even me tbh. I think this season is the one who most lack of perfomance and music, as crazy as that sounds. But that's not what i was going to talk about.

The thing that REALLY bothers me in any anime i watch is when people treat a character that is not a villain or have any malicious intent at all, like they are one. If you go to certain forums like reddit, for example, and see how many people are so against Mayu's character is unbelivable. But i'm all over the place, so let me explain:

*from the moment she was introduced, she has been depicted as a "mysterious" girl, who doesn't wanna be in bad terms with anyone. USUALLY IN ANIME, these type of characters are hiding their true colors and should not be trusted. Minus one point to Mayu
*the way she constantly ask for Kumiko if she should forfeit annoyed A HELL LOT OF PEOPLE, and i must confess even i thought she was exagerating a bit. Some people even called this disrespeectful (like Kanade did, but i'll get into that in a sec). Minus one point to Mayu.
*she is (and that is undeniable) Kumiko's rival in this season. Meaning: she is the ONLY PERSON IN HER WAY of her "dream" to play with Reina. Minus one point to Mayu.

Ok, all that said, i must confess: i still fail in see why people dislike her. It's not as if she is acting in a way to harm people or is scheming smth. But being on the internet for a long time, i know exactly what happen in this case: if people don't like a character for whatever silly reason they have, THEY WILL TRY TO FIND A WAY TO JUSTIFY IT, AND WILL TRY TO PICK ANY FLAW on that character. And Kanade last episode GAVE THESE PEOPLE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED. In Kanade's POV, what Mayu was doing was disrespectful bc, in her vision, Mayu wants Kumiko to tell she should forfeit, which implies saying "ok, you're better than me, so please forfeit. I want the soli". That's what Kanade thought Mayu is trying to do.
But reading some comments on reddit actually made me realize smth. Yes, Kanade is right, but not 100%. Mayu INDEED want Kumiko's approval to forfeit, but not bc she is implying she will win (which, btw, she would, and she did LOL). If we get into Mayu's POV, this becomes a little easier to understand: she is a new student, doesn't have any friends, and doesn't know anyone, but still, her love for playing is such that she chose to enter the club. We know she had a "bad past" that makes her avoid ANY TYPE OF CONFLICT, even going to extremes and saying "she doesn't have a sense of self anymore". Which means "i'm willing to even supress what i am if this will avoid conflict in a group / club". BUT all that said, it was also showed that SHE IS HERSELF WHEN SHE'S PLAYING. That is the only moment when she gives her all, EVEN KNOWING she can cause trouble (being better than Kumiko in this case). And the reason for that is: Mayu is a confused and conflicted character. She loves playing, she WANTS TO PLAY IN HER BEST, but at the same time she doesn't want to cause trouble, which made her conclude that she needed to consult someone to kinda "guide" her to what to do, and that person was Kumiko (she's the president and most respected person there, so that makes sense).

So yeah, deep inside, Mayu HAD A FEELING SHE WAS BETTER THAN KUMIKO, but her constantly going to her and kept asking that wasn't to make Kumiko feel bad (like Kanade was assuming, and that's where i completely disagree with her). It was to have a concrete answer, like "yeah, you can forfeit". If Kumiko had said that in any moment, she would have 100%. Unless someone tells her what to do, given how conflicted and confused she is, she will keep asking, AS ANNOYING AS THAT COMES OFF.

Ok, now about Reina, Taki and Kitauji itself. First about Taki. People are SO MAD at him rn you have no idea. Calling him incompetent for not deciding for himself and all that. And tbh? I don't blame them. He literally REPEATED what they did in S1 with Kaori vs Reina thing (which we all remember how that played out). If Kitauji's system is on this "meritocracy" thing, people in charge should decide, not let to the own students decide smth so important as who will play the soli. For many people, Taki really slipped up here (again LOL).
About Reina..........ohhh boy. Do a favor to yourself and go to reddit later, and see the memes 😂 Ok, here we go: people are absolutely and COMPLETELY hating her right now. You have no idea how much actually. I'm gonna go through some arguments right now:

*she spent half of the season saying she wanted to play the soli with Kumiko, putting more and more pression on her, EVEN THO she told Shuichi a few eps ago to not put pression on Kumiko.
*their relationship till now (which many like to consider yuri, even tho i'm part of the minority that don't see that way), was kinda broken after this, BC SHE BLATANTLY ADMITED SHE KNEW WHEN KUMIKO WAS PLAYING AND EVEN SO DIDN'T PICK HER.
*her crying in the end made people even more mad at her, bc it was like she didn't want that outcome.

People are so mad bc they think Reina betrayed Kumiko and is acting like a hypocrite later, crying like "this wasn't her fault". Listen, i'm gonna have to say what i think: IF SHE HAD CHOSEN KUMIKO THERE EVEN THINKING MAYU WAS BETTER, she'd have betrayed HERSELF, bc Reina always believed, and still do, IN TALENT. Period. What Reina did there was being truthful to herself and her beliefs. Nothing more.
A few people were saying they should break their friendship after this, bc ultimately it was Reina who completely took off Kumiko's opportunity to play the soli. Some are even saying Kumiko's new best friends should be Kanade and Shuichi (literally her ex-bf LOL).

That's it. I know people are having problems with this seasons overall for many reasons, but while i don't appreciate the lack of music and performance, i'm not that bothered by it, and instead what bothers me is how people can't see from literally ANY OTHER CHARACTER POV except Kumiko right now.

Reina is an unchanging symbol who always pursues her beliefs
Kumiko is a symbol of change, having grown up under the influence of Reina's dedication to her beliefs
The two of them were complete opposites, which made each other feel special
Because the two girls were complete opposites, they each took different paths in the future
This ending was inevitable for both of them

我覺得這邊前行的意思是在不同道路上並行，而不再是想在吹奏者的道路上了。不過麗奈的選擇還是讓我很心痛和有點生氣的，即使這是符合麗奈人設的選擇。不過這集我哭最慘的還是小奏的部分😭😭

青春總有遺憾 可能對久美子而言北宇治的失敗才是青春最大的遺憾，另外聲優訪談也有說到 京都動畫在一開始在茶園宣傳圖上 只有麗奈和真由才有拿樂器，其實已有暗示了

I have watched this episode at least 5 times and I have cried each time, it is so hard to see Kumiko lose, and although I am aware that it is different in the novel, I have marveled at the work that Kyoani did with this change, please someone hug Kanapii!

The biggest surprise, I think nobody was expecting Kumiko to lose. However this was the way to go it felt so real and did so much for Mayu, Kumiko and Reina as characters. Reina staying true to herself being the quality Kumiko adores about her a bitter sweet end nonetheless. Kumiko staying positive and being a pillar for the group till the end and Mayu finally finding peace and feeling included.

Fun Fact: In Light Novel Kumiko was the one who won.

黑澤朋世：我覺得這季是「緩緩離別的故事」。第9集中在橋上的爭吵是決定性的，從那一刻起，久美子開始走向從學生到大人的道路，而麗奈則以學生的身份，然後開始走上職業的道路。在第11集中她們和解並且擁抱，久美子再次對麗奈說她是“特別的”，但我覺得對久美子而言，在橋上的那一刻，“特別”的時期已經結束了，之後的久美子似乎是在安撫麗奈。

麗奈從一開始就沒有任何改變，她覺得自己直到最後都對久美子一往情深。從久美子的角度而言，久美子並不是討厭麗奈，而是因為意識到之前的「特別」是「共依存」般的不正常關係，於是她將這種關係​​轉向健康的「友誼」方向。這正是久美子決定長大成人後才意識到的，我想這也是久美子的成長。

この回は、日本でも大きく賛否が分かれました。なぜなら、原作では久美子は最後のコンクールで麗奈とソリを吹くストーリーになっているからです。つまり、アニメは敢えて原作と大きく変えました。しかし、ZikiTTKさんもおっしゃっている通り、久美子の今後の人生を考えるとこのオーディションの結果も大きな財産になる、ともいえます。久美子も真由も、そして麗奈も「音楽に嘘はつけなかった」のです。次回はいよいよ最終回。久美子たちは全国大会で金賞を目指します。

I've been waiting for this episode

这一集我最喜欢的部分也是久美子和真由在窗边谈话的部分，久美子真的好厉害，能够看出真由内心的想法，看到两个人这里能袒露心扉让我很高兴，最不喜欢的部分也是最后和丽奈十指相扣，感觉很莫名其妙，可能是因为丽奈在久美子眼中是个特别的人，这也是两者最重要的联系，只要丽奈做这个特别的人，即便去了美国这份联系也会存在，这是我的强行理解，但我还是无法接受最后的十指相扣。
我觉得久美子在填志愿的时候以及吹奏的时候是有迷茫的，就像在高三填完志愿的时候，总是会想着自己这样的选择是不是正确的，另一个选择会不会更好，但是在久美子落选时却决定做一个正确的人的时候，久美子的内心就没有迷茫了，换来的是对未来更加的坚定，对自己选择的路，对两位老师觉得自己会选择的路，更加的坚定。

久美子と真由がもう少し早い段階で互いに本音で話せれば良かったと思います。ただ、同時に本音で話せるようになるまでにはここまでの時間が必要だったとも感じます。

我总觉得花田在大方向上有点过于偏执了，以至于忽视了小剧情的连贯性，在追求“反套路”与“合理性”的路上陷入了难以言明的漩涡。这季一直围绕着“实力至上的北宇治”和"青春总有遗憾"做文章，但是让丽奈这个角色的很多发言变得很回旋镖很幽默，我不是不能接受久美子落选，但我不能接受久美子以“在五五开的局面被丽奈补最后一刀”这种方式落选。整季下来除了久美子逐渐成圣的成长曲线之外，几乎看不到其余老角色的角色弧光也是让我很失望的一点。
还有就是ziki的那句“青春为什么只能有遗憾不能有成功”我也十分赞同，京吹前面几季不都在遗憾吗？从久一年拿铜的明日香遗憾到久二年的合奏比赛银河战舰，香织明日香夏纪优子哪个不遗憾，到第三季还在遗憾，这种从始至终的遗憾和失意真的很让我沮丧😢
