the third section, about how he struggled with having a concept and then wanting to execute things in a certain specific way, rather than letting it happen naturally, speaks to me. that’s my biggest problem, im way too focused on the thousands upon thousands of details i can’t even comprehend yet, and how they’ll somehow amount to some grand picture. hearing that he scrapped that and things still worked out makes me feel reassured. the evolution of his sound segment was great too

Never got into NIN as a young guy...recently put on Pretty Hate Machine again after a couple listens about 10 years ago. Was stricken by the fully fleshed out sound presented by just one guy, without relying primarily on guitars. Then I heard Something I can Never Have and was blown away by the utter brokenness of the lyrics and the advanced NIN sound that he nailed down all the way back in '89.

Saw a documentary on here about BPD in which one of the subjects with BPD mentions that The Downward Spiral was the perfect soundtrack for his episodes of self loathing and self harm. When someone taps into something so dark it's probably worth investing time into. Reznor clearly has a singular vision
