I would be very curious how long the coastguard pilot had been working. Perhaps fatigue was a factor?

i watched a video by a pilot and he said it is very hard to see planes on the runway at night. He was not surprised they did not see them.

If the aircraft was ingulfed with fire of course there is a possibility that evacuation audio wires were burnt 🔥🔥 and under no circumstances they would work.hence each aircraft has a battery operated loud hailer for such events. Well done Japan airlines cabin crew 😊😊

Technically “continue approach” does not clear them to land. If they haven’t heard “cleared to land” after this they must’ve gone missed. Did they cut off half of the audio?

We need better radios in the aviation industry. There is too much static.

This is a testament to the amazing engineering work by Airbus, the A350 incredible structural design and rigidity performed remarkably, allowing to come to a safe stop even after being hit by another aircraft while landing.
That amazing composite design allowed the evacuation of all passengers safely. Well done Airbus!

Will, have you ever been in the cockpit at night when you are trying to land? obviously not. It is nigh on impossible to see anything on the runway at night. All the clearance lights on the Dash 8 would've looked like any of the runway lights. On listening to the audio, the tower said to continue approach not clear to land as the Jal Boeing replied

It is not a miracle that all passengers survived, but thanks to the precise actions of the cabin crew.
The cabin crew had judged the exits that could be opened in a cabin engulfed in flames, and had given precise instructions to escape without their luggage. As the telephone lines to the cockpit were disconnected, the cabin crew in the back seat had to use their own judgement to determine an escape route. In the end, three of the eight escape exits were usable. Finally, the captain took a final look around the cabin and evacuated the few remaining passengers before making the final escape. It was not a miracle, but it was brave.

I would like the media to pursue if the following (I saw some people saying them on the comment section)is true or not.
* In the past, there have been cases of runway incursions, so a warning system was introduced. However, even with the warning, the controller was not aware of the incursion. Was the warning system designed and implemented in a way that made it difficult for controllers to be aware of the warnings?
* The stop bar was broken from December 27, but was it left unattended?
* Was the number of takeoffs and landings manageable? Or was it an unreasonable operation due to the need for inbound revenue?

Most important points are
1. Why JAL pilot could not see plane on runway at height or taxing to runway with available Taxi lights of both planes, available navigation lights of both planes, communication done between Air traffic tower and bombardier coast Guards plane.
2. Tail lights, Navigation lights, belly lights, Fusiledge top lights, all should be on in this case a plane is on approach or on runway could easily be assessed.
3. The visibility at Haneda was very good, in thus condition none of the two cautioned the self and blindly followed tower is biggest mistake.
4. No doubt holding must had been communicated but considering the Defense plane on emergency supply need duty tower must had informed to go around let bombardier go then approach for landing message could easily be done.
We pray to God, May all the departed souls in accident be remain in peace with God.
But fault finding needs be done on improvement base for airport services and priority concern be looked after.

Well done to the JAL crew for conducting an evacuation under challenging conditions. Lives were saved when some exits such as overwing could not be used and PA systems were not at 100%.

We're very lucky that the captain of the Dash 8 flight survived, as he was the one taxiing and making final decisions. I've already heard that he believed he was cleared onto the runway. Yet the person on the radios clearly read back holding point C5, which means on the taxiway C5 NEXT to the runway. Not to enter. So the CVR will be very useful if they can get the data.

As for why the airplane wasn't seen by the A350 crew, look at the video again. How hard it is to see the prop on the runway? You can JUST make out their strobes and wing inspection lights. And we're all LOOKING for it, knowing it is there. When you are landing, the runway lights are much more condensed together, making it even harder to detect a plane on the runway. Airplane navigation lights (required at night) follow nautical rules. Green and red viewed from forward angles so you can discern their direction of travel more easily. White only, often a single light, as viewed from straight back. They also have strobe lights on the wings that you can just barely see. But these are all designed to be seen in the air, not as much on the ground against everything else. These lights, if any brighter, would have other complications like blinding other flight crews. We rely on other systems to keep airplanes apart on runways. Unfortunately, that failed this time.

I have always believed that the sound of the communication between the pilots and the control tower should be clearer, louder and slower to avoid confusions. I dont know if the technology used is outdated or if there is a better way to do it, but every time I hear a conversation between pilots and ground personnel it is very difficult for me to understand.

Nothing was wrong with the aircraft. Megaphones are used to make sure people hear and when the aircraft is shut down the PA system no longer works so you must be able to talk to the evacuating passengers. CNN you should really verify your BS before you talk about it.

Just occured to me that there's nothing at airports to prevent errant pilots from entering a runway. There are literally dozens of incursions that almost were horrible tragedies but why not a gate at the top of the taxiways. A gate that's buzzed open by CT once runway is clear? I realize this would slow busy times but ....

Apparently the pilot who survived on the Coast Guard flight is claiming ATC had given them clearance to take off...even thought the transcript clearly shows the last instruction given to JA722A was to "taxi to holding point C5" and that is what they read back. This exchange was right after ATC had cleared JAL516 to land, so it's possible the coast guard flight has missed that part of the communication too and was unaware of arrival traffic. Brings to mind the Tenerife accident. So sad for the crew members who perished.

There is a big difference between the command of "continue to approach", which is what the tower issued, and "cleared to land", which is what the pilot understood.

I am a professional Helicopter pilot. In the US, ATC uses the phrase "position and hold" to instruct pilots to taxi onto the runway and hold there, while using "hold short" to instruct pilots to stop short of the runway.

Everyone is giving kudos to the flight crew, right fully so, that’s why I want to give kudos to Airbus and the engineers of this plane.

Even after hitting a smaller plane at over 200 km/h (over 120 mph) the aircraft, except for the front landing gear, was completely intact.

If you look at the videos of this incident, the airplane, although not in a good shape, was more or less completely intact even after all the passengers had evacuated.

Incredibly well made aircraft. So kudos to Airbus and the engineers. But of course, also kudos to the flight crew and training they went through.

Communication needs to be improved between pilots and the control tower universally around the world because of this crash. Don’t tell a pilot to hold short of C5 rather use proper safe universal language of ie. hold short runway 36 aircraft on final. All airports around the world need to use this terminology. KISS. Simple

Is this because the Japanese language is different? Can anyone help?
