Definitely “Fields of Gold” by Sting

"Ruby Rain" from Dario Argento's "Trauma" (music by Pino Donaggio, vocals by Laura Evan) is the most hauntingly beautiful song I've ever heard.

Also, 'Old Souls' from The Phantom of the Paradise movie (1974), written by Paul Williams. That's an amazingly haunting song as well.

Sorry but just like Cash with Hurt, Disturbed version Sound of Silence makes SG version extremely dated.

Madonna's "Drowned World/Substitute for Love" is personally my favorite hauntingly beautiful song! I mean, just listen to the intro, that monotonic electronic sound and the sweeping cold wind sound matching together is like floating in the middle of nowhere, then Madonna's voice comes in, and it feels like heaven...

Daisy Gray's Version of Wicked Game makes a pretty good showing for this list. The snare is a sample of chains across the floor, the bondage of love, deep in all kinds of ways. Lana Del Ray's Summertime Saddness is another honorable mention. Sting's Shape of my Heart is pretty good too with that crazy lonely nylon string guitar.

Ok, no, the best “version” of this song is not this
It’s certainly KD Lang’s version, for real. It is magical, this you tube had the right song, but totally dropped the ball on the real best version, even better than the real thing, even better than the real. I double dog dare ya, google KD Lang Hallelujah. Nothin’ comes close, and I have the ear fa music.

I get a kick out of the angry comments about not hearing the songs. I mean, this is a list, and there are requisite explanations for why the song is included. When I hear a song I like, I search for it separately and THEN listen to all of it. Can we just be happy that a human is speaking and not one of the monotone auto-voices on many channels? Just sayin’.

More like several crap songs

the narrator leaves no room to hear even a moment of the song and annoying voice & commercial tambour wasn't a good match

I have watched 3 different “sad” or “moving” song lists by WatchMojo, and all three had Sound of Silence. What S&G song was NOT on ANY of the three? Bridge Over Troubled Water, perhaps one of the most powerful songs ever, considering the time it was written. (JFK, MLK had passed recently, America was in the middle of Vietnam. Ya know, small events 🙄)

I checked this out to hear hauntingly beautiful songs, not to listen to some endlessly narrating over them so I could never actually hear the 15 seconds of each song that they played. No one gives a flying freak about the statistics you give for the song if that means they can't hear any part of it. The only good side of this was that I could check the song titles out later, because I totally agree with Mad World, but maybe not so much with Angel.

"Caught By The Light" by The Boxer Rebellion is very hauntingly beautiful, and could easily replace some of these on this list. It was used on the television show NCIS after the death of Mike Franks, Agent Gibbs' mentor, for his funeral scenes and other reminiscences of him during that scene. Check it out.
