No offense but that first advice sucks. As a guitar player i know pretty well you can get away with chords, in fact i dont even need that chord pdf you mention but i can tell you how much i regret of not developing my sight reading skill. Now i rely on tabs and shit because of it. Im actually considering learning piano so i can develop sight reading along with an intrument im not technically advanced (among other reasons) lol. Please guys, if you're beginners on an instrument try to learn the theory and reading music, its not the funniest thing to do but im sure it pays off. As a teacher of mine used to say: "If you don't do something, let it be because you don't want to, not because you can't."

Bro everybody here needs to know that reading sheet music IS IMPORTANT. Imagine learning a new language but you cant actually read it 💀. When he says you wont need to if youre just learning your favorite pop song, he should have said that you wont need to if youre not trying to be proficient as a musician. I promise it will be worth it and youd grow fast af 💪🏿

You might find putting 15 minutes everyday to learn how to read music a little handier , in the long run, than taking short cuts . If you don’t, your abilities will always sound like short cuts. - Trust me, chords get boring, quickly.
Also, Learning to read music is not hard at all - it just takes action.

The chord thing is great to play a little bit of piano. But if you want to exploit the full potential of the instrument and the pianoplaying, you benefit a lot of beeing able to read sheets, no matter what kind of music you want to play.

Don't follow tip 1, learn how to read sheet music, it will help you to really improve and make practice faster. Also don't just copy chords, learn their structure, how to modify them, etc.

Don't agree with the first one. The problem with chords is that is sounds boring, you repeat same chords over and over again and in most cases it sounds nothing like the song you would like to hear. Imo it is better to learn how to read sheet music.

In order to read sheet music for most of the popular songs you need 3 things - to know how to locate any note on your keyboard from the sheet music; to know about flats and sharps; to know about measure and notes length. With this understanding there will be so many great songs that you can easily learn. You can learn all of this stuff in less than a week.

Most of people here are saying that leaning how to read sheet music first is important only for the future, in a long run or for a better basics understanding but that's not true. It's not "important", it just gives you so much more with just a little effort. You won't regret it no matter what you wanna play - popular pop songs or classical pieces. Also there is "easy piano", simplified versions of mostly anything. It's not as rich as the original but still good, it's recognisable and sounds way better than chords.

The only case where I would possibly go with chords if when you can sing and only need an accompaniment like it was shown in this video. I'd still go with sheet music as it is richer and always sounds better but chords at least make some sense and look like a decent alternative.

I think there is missing #5 - not having fun. It's not about all learning but also if it really makes you feel good when you play. I don't care how long I will learn, it's not my lifehood. I am already master at other things. Remember that and just enjoy.

You have to learn the basic rules of music in order to sound good or your going to sound like shit all your life and listening to this guy is going to make you sound worse.

Maybe it's just me, but just the backing chords seem nothing like a song to me. My brain only cares about the melody.
I guess that's the way to do pop music, but maybe that's why I have no interest in playing pop music.

The D Major used in the example is actually a D Major on A, because the root is a A, which has a different sound than a regular D Major. And that's why I struggled to understand chords. To understand the "why", I had to understand music theory, no shortcuts.
But to learn music on the go, use Synthesia (when it was free, Piano From Above is a good alternative)

Imagine an English teacher telling their student they don’t need to learn how to read English! Only if you’re planning to read books, but if all you wanna do is watch movies, there’s no need to learn to read!😂😂😂I guess if your musical goal stops at Taylor Swift songs (or any pop song), then you need not learn to read! Unless you wanna play the melody in your right hand and the chords in the left hand! There’s always an “unless”! Just learn to read! It’s not that hard!

Learning to read sheet music is like learning to read a book. Then there's the interpretation which is understanding and finally learning scales and chords gets you to play this advice but to a far higher standard. Chords are easy.
