China's "Ethnic minorities" are mostly indistinguishable from the majority Han and speak exactly the same language, the only major difference being that they wear costumes and do dances for Han tourists. 99% of the time, if you see somebody in one of these costumes, it's a Han tourist dressing up for the day.

In the UK we treat our minorities the same way. Busloads of Anglo-Saxon tourists head to Brixton every day to watch the blacks jumping around in their loincloths. just to let others know, Miao is a group of different minorities in china and Hmong is the largest ethnicity group in the Miao minority. Hmong is not Miao, Hmong is one of the Miao minority group in china and their custom is distinguish from others. if you didn't know then yes you can call them Miao.
