This is a difference between the Western and Russian or even Slavic mindsets. Western mindset dictates the case law system, where a use of a chemical compound, that has a temporary effect and in it's way is more or less safe (it still can inflict injuries) to be approved, as set of a precedent for other side to have a right to use a substance even if it is lethal. In Slavic mindset it is more logical to ignore the law and use a more humane but illegal option instead of a completely legal napal like substance, that if not will burn you alive might create a lethal gas in the process that will kill you without you even notice it.

But we are still living in Western set of minded rules and laws so this is still a violation. Is it a systematic use of illegal substances by armed forces? Seems like on both sides of the conflict some individuals decide to use a less lethal means of clearing out individuals hideouts. The claims of uses of other lethal chemical substances requires an investigation of such cases. It might be done in case of capturing of the equipment by one of the sides, however this could be done only after the end of the conflict. Sadly as we all know how it goes, such investigations are usually get scrapped under the rug, as with that a lot of unpleasant information pops out, that might be better exchanged for some political or even geopolitical gains, rather then presented to public knowledge.

Russia fell back because that is what you do in attritional wars, save your resources and manpower , forget about land and go to defendable positions. Ukraine then went on the attack playing into Russia's hands losing manpower and equipment, then when they were exhausted Russia then went on aggressive defence, It is debatable as to how many soldiers Russia lost in the first year.
Mobilisation will only make more coffins for Ukraine. even with rotation. they will be all untrained and underequipped against a seasoned trained , well-equipped army. Had Ukraine spent the money into making defendable positions, better trenches, concrete pill boxes, dragons teeth, etc and retreated t it then maybe the situation would have been better. Russia would still win but it would take longer, Instead, the money went into the back pockets of the politicians and the businessmen. Had Ukraine and the west studied Russia's way fo war then they would not have fallen into the same trap as the Germans did in Stalingrad.

I understand where you're coming from but if NATO didn't want Russia on it's borders then why is it NATO that has expanded to almost every part of Russia's European borders? Russia had not taken a step westward until 2022, it was NATO that rolled east, absorbing country after country into the US-led military alliance.

If NATO truly did not want Russia on it's borders then it would have agreed with the position that the Russians have stated over and over for the better part of 2 decades - that Ukraine must remain a neutral country. That would have left a buffer zone between Russia and NATO members such as Poland and Romania. Instead, the NATO leadership doubled down again and again on it's drive to make Ukraine a part of the alliance - a position that has resulted in a devastating war that is progressively reducing the country to ruins and a whole generation of it's young men being sent to the slaughter.

And ironically, ensured that the Russian military is now going to be permanently deployed physically closer to Polish-Romanian/NATO territory.

This is a disaster born of arrogance and hubris - we are learning the hard lesson that the US-led west is not all-powerful and that when someone says that our actions are making them feel threatened in their own home and they won't tolerate it, we need to listen rather than try and ram what we want down their throat.
