Security Onion Essentials 2.3 - Security Onion Installation, Part 1

Very helpful, following along and things are going good so far.

Does this have to be installed with CentOS as the underlying OS? or can it be Ubuntu like in previous versions? The reason I ask is because VirtualBox doesnt have CentOS as an option.

tried to install but It says kernel panic when after starting up the VM,. Any idea on how to fix it

Is it possible to install SO on less than 12 GBs of RAM? My original device has 8 GBs maximum.

I can't follow the steps on downloading those ISO files. On what application did you paste those ISO files?

Is it possible to install on top of Redhat or Oracle Linux ?

I'm installing on bare metal, 240G drive, flashed it with the ISO. When I start the machine it won't complete the install. I try and try and it keeps saying there's not enough disk space when installing Centos 7. I don't understand why.

Can I just install Security Onion directly on my VMWare workstation pro without installing centos?

This is great - I have installed SO successfully as a VM - but I have a question pre-install. Where in the network does this need to sit? In other words, can it just be anywhere in the network? Or does it need to filter traffic for machines behind it?

For the adapter it's one host-only and one NAT ? Or do both need to be in isolated networks. I'm installing this for a class.

On virtual box, will the first adapter be set to Host-only with promiscous mode allow-all? or does it have to be NAT.

Not able to find CentOS in VM Ware Fusion, any suggestions?

The installation and all is simple, it's understanding how to correctly configure the assignment of its IPv4 in VMware workstation so that it con communicate with other machines in the virtual network. That's difficult.
