I had a classmate just like him, wouldn't talk for months, and suddenly he would say one sentence and everyone freaked out...

I used to travel Center St. in Salem back in the day and passed by the Oregon State Hospital daily on my way to work. Was always kind of cool knowing they filmed a classic there.

Yep, one of the best movies ever. The book by Ken Kesey is a must read, certainly adds to the movie, but obviously misses the imposed visual aspect. That aspect is a great achievement of the director, the cast. The movie is hilarious because of McMurphy's character, totally anti-totalitarian, pro-life, pro-freedom, all the things the USA lost as it is the USA that the cuckoo's nest portrays. The hate for personal freedom by the system, by the institutions is manifest in the movie and very tangible in modern western society. Ken Kesey was a visionary, way ahead of his time. Of course it is highly symbolic that the native american "Chief" escaped the system and became free after setting McMurphy's spirit free.

If ever there was a magic moment in cinema and acting ability at its highest, Jack Nicolson and his counterpart show us why. I have never acted, but in my opinion acting is the most challenging and difficult of all the arts. Why do I say that? Because actors are like paintings and sculptures that come alive and when they momentarily take us away from everything and anything we're aware of, it is only then that your realize something extraordinary has happened. Moreover, the most beautiful and humble and gracious acknowledgement of Nicolson's achievement came from none other, Michael Douglas, who's father I believed wanted to do the role and it was Douglas who bought the rights to One Flew Over the Coocoo’s Nest. Michael Douglas said the same thing, that Nicolson was the not only the right man for the part, but the only one who could pull it off with perfection. I love the movies!!

The 1970s was the greatest decade for filmmaking because the decline of the studio system unleashed a wave of experimentation and rule-breaking, unlike today where corporations are only interested in packaging soulless content.

This so reminds me of when KT a once huge man from the village I grew up in. He was known to many as Kate even though he had a long beard. For a long time after having a motorcycle accident when he was young he never really spoke and played a fool. He used to give me a hand when I started working. I’ll never forget the time when we were out travellin in a van and had a mechanical issue. He just knew how to fix it explained it and was normal. I asked him why did he pretend to be stupid and the village fool when he wasn’t it was the Moment for me like when Jack Nicholson realised. He had been given electric shock treatment and discussed it in detail.
It wasn’t Juicy fruit for us it was Spam sandwiches. RIP Keith. I left the village many years ago and was informed recently this year Kate or Katy as they called him was as sitting on a park village bench ,by now an old old man when was killed by a Drink Driver.
You finally escaped Chief as did I.

The greatest thing about this scene is that Mac is so happy to talk to a sane person; which includes all the staff as well. The two only sane people in an insane asylum and they are the inmates.

I mean, Wrigleys Juicy Fruit was the best flavour gum. I feel sad that it’s disappeared and been replaced by sugar free menthol scales 1-5. My kids will never know the delight of peeling back that foil and having their senses assaulted by that sweet soft piece of confectionary excellence. It was good while it lasted. You got it right Americans ❤ 🇬🇧
