If you’ve been a “bad boy “they’re gonna take your gold and lock you up anyway. Don’t be so silly.

This is one of the weakest argument I have ever heard against bars. And talking about one ounce? not a kilo bar? or 10 ounce?

A bigger point is the size of the Costco gold bar. It is worth a lot of money, and it would be a shame to trade one of your 10 or 100 gold bars for some small but necessary transaction. Trading a gold bar for a few antibiotic pills might be a worthwhile trade in many circumstances, but if you had smaller coins or bars, you could make a more fair trade.

To say nothing of the fact that I could buy the same metal from a respected seller in my area for about $100 less per ounce. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the governments were taking careful note of who is buying these to set the stage for gold confiscation 2.0

Bullets, lots of bullets. lol my ex gf and I broke up because she was trying to talk me into selling my bullets. She was like you don’t shoot much anymore, and I’m like nope.

Still I think gold coins overseas is the way to go. One you can’t take bullets overseas. You can get different sizes and values.

Gold bars come in ALL sizes, down to as small as 1 gram which is MUCH smaller than any coin. ANYBODY in the world that understands the value of gold also knows EXACTLY how much a gram is. Also bars can be purchased at about half the premium over spot that coins can. Gold coins also have actual dollar values stamped on them, so this crazy "intelligence officer trying to bribe your way out of jams overseas" scenario you talk about.... well if you think they going to value your gold more because it is in coins that they can wrap their head around, try explaining to them how your 1oz Gold Eagle is worth more than 20 times the $50 that is stamped on it. IF it was "coins" they valued just give them some old Ike dollar coins, MUCH larger and can get 2000 of them for the same price.

If things in the U.S. go haywire and banks are closed how would gold coins buy groceries or fuel? It would have to be very difficult times. Do you think silver is better for barter because of losing less ?

You can buy one 1 oz gold bar for around $1970 right now , versus 10 x 1/10 oz coin for $2300 ! Unless you know a place where you can buy gold at spot price , it doesn’t seems right to me .

A friend was in the military during the war in Croatia. He would watch women buy bread using gold chains and cutting off links. I've given some thought in buying gold chains. You can also travel with jewelry without any hassle with customs.

You can get bars (bullion) smaller than an ounce.
When you buy a coin with a pretty design you are paying more than the gold is worth alone. That might not translate into value later.

In my opinion, for the majority of people, silver coins are much more practical than gold coins. Gold at over $1900 an ounce is impractical to use in most situations, i.e. providing, food shelter or clothing, guns, ammunition, etc. Even a 1/4 ounce gold coin is valued around $475. It's highly unlikely the merchant from which you purchase your goods will be able to provide change in an acceptable form. Plus both of you would need to know the market value of several metals, currencies, commodities, etc.
It is my belief that the overwhelming majority of your listeners will never be in a position where they would need to bribe a public official, especially a foreign public official.
Also, since gold is so valuable, it's difficult to limit the amount of money you have with you.
Just two 1/4 ounce gold coins are worth $950--a great temptation to any thief or mugger.
Since silver coins are much less valuable, using them to complete almost all transactions is much more practical and safer.
I'm looking at the time which I believe is fast approaching, where currency and bank accounts continue to lose their value even when you don't use them.
Some other things I do in an effort to keep my financial situation private.
I strive to keep my finances (bank accounts, credit accounts, income, etc.) off the internet.
I do not make online purchases.
I use cash for the great majority of my purchases, especially any purchase which I do not wished to be tracked or become public knowledge,

These big retail outlets constantly have their servers hacked and all the private information of their customers end up online, like names, addresses, and your recent purchase of the shiny metals. Costco doesn't care if your personal info ends up online. So why even take the chance? Just buy it at a LCS with cash, totally anonymous.

Great point Jason. The other advantages of silver/gold coins minted by a government is that these are legal tender as well and backed by the nation issueing them. Commemorative coins and gold bars may not be.
