Train in vain is forgettable? What a lot of nonsense.
ОтветитьRe: 2112, I think it was because it really is a pivotal album for Rush where they really took hold of their own destiny so to speak. They made a statement. Not my favorite Rush album, but it's very powerful and it got me hooked on them. I do like Hemispheres better overall. The tidal pools song is Natural Science...
ОтветитьI agree with all these except maybe 2112 and London Calling.
ОтветитьWhen I saw the cover of Secret Treaties, I thought it was a joke. And I was reassured that it was one of some kind. This album is not that well known to mainstream audiences, and never appears at the top lists of the greatest albums of all time. The sound is dated compared to the hard/heavy rock albums of the late 70's, but the musicality is there. Astronomy should be a classic known to all (I know that Metallica covered it on one of its records, which undoubtedly made it better known). For me the Blue Öyster Cult is in many ways an underrated band.
As for your top three overrated albums, I can agree on some aspects:
- I was disappointed with London Calling when I bought it. At the time I had The Clash's first album on cassette, and I listened to it over and over. I was expecting a punk album, which London Calling was not. So like you I liked the title song and Guns Of Brixton (which is sung by Paul Simonon who wrote it and not by Joe Strummer as you said). The rest seemed to me to be entertainment music for FM radios. With hindsight, I can better see how this album had an influence on what followed, by opening rock to new influences. So it's still not my favorite album, but it shook up the codes and paved the way for a lot of bands that followed. And it has retained a modernity and an eclecticism that still makes it very listenable 45 years after its release.
- I listened to The Wall a lot when I was a teenager, and I really liked this record which works like a journey. Now that I'm 53 I don't listen to it at all. I now find it indigestible, self-indulgent, sexist, sinister, resentful (David Gilmour is of this opinion) and incredibly megalomaniac. As a teenager, I didn't have the necessary perspective, not to mention that I'm French and the only line I understood from the whole thing was "We don't need no education". I saw the film when I was 17, I thought it was great. Now I've had the DVD for at least 20 years and I've never been able to watch it again.
- Unlike the other two which were records that could hardly be avoided at the beginning of the 80's, I bought Pet Sounds much later because it appears in the first places of most of the rankings. I only knew the Beach Boys from their hits on a compilation. Pet Sounds wasn't a record of my time, which wasn't a big deal considering I always listened to a lot of 60's bands like the Kinks and many others. So yes it's pretty and it's well done, but I didn't find anything extraordinary or that particularly touched me. I already had God Only Knows and Wouldn't It Be Nice on my hits compilation. So I kept the record but I never listen to it.
Otherwise thank you for the translation of the song of Kiss, it shows that you can sell almost anything, as long as the packaging is eye-catching. I remember when I was 10, Kiss and AC/DC were the most popular hard rock bands in France, even though at that age they were basically logos for me. But AC/DC has always been a sincere band with a real sense of self-deprecation, which Kiss never was. And AC/DC always played simple but visceral music, which is something Kiss never knew how to do.
Oh -- up until now I thought you spoke with a British accent. Now you reveal that you sound like that because you talk while keeping your tongue tucked into your cheek.
And that's probably why all the long intros -- working through getting your tongue to behave.
Now that we understand all that hoop-jumping we can adjust. So carry on . . .
"KISS" isn't low-hanging fruit. They are fruit that already fell to the ground and began to rot.
Ответить"Rubber Soul" is 1965.
"The Beach Boys" are a right-wing Reaganite white bread barbershop quartet -- you're right -- with electric guitars.
Their idols were "The Lettermen" and -- the striped shirts -- "The Kingston Trio" for the harmonies.
His breakdown of why the DJ Shadow album was so well-reviewed is really astute.
ОтветитьI agree with a lot of these and the one I don't agree with are ones i don't know!!. Love these videos! Thank you!
ОтветитьInteresting, enlightening and enjoyable as always. But … I disagree with you on Exile on amazing Street and London Calling. I understand the view point you are perceiving those an albums from. But I love them and believe they are not overrated because they are both so sprawling, epic, chaotic messes. Does that make me perverse. Maybe 🤔. I also, understand your position on Pet Sounds. I love it because of its melodies. Its highlights are sublime but its weak points are … well weak. TBH I love and prefer Brian Wilson’s recreation of the Smile sessions mainly because it includes Good Vibrations, Surf’s Up and Heroes and Villains.
ОтветитьLook Kiss are great showmen but just don't listen to WHAT they say or sing.
ОтветитьWrong about exile and London calling.
ОтветитьBrits-not all- tend to miss the greatness of middle period beach boys.
ОтветитьI put Trout Mask Replica on the other day and my 10 year old granddaughter said "when does the music start"?
ОтветитьI don't often play Trout Mask Replica, but when I do all other music feels stodgy and obvious. Other Beefheart stuff disappoints.
ОтветитьPet Sounds saved my life - it’s the greatest album of all time IMO.
ОтветитьSaw Kiss when destroyer came out live in Miami, great show but only played shout in out loud from that album, but hotter than hell is their best album.
ОтветитьThere's ONE great album in London Calling. And the rest is one bad album.
ОтветитьRumours by the biggest margin ever.
ОтветитьThat lyric of Kiss is written with some humour. I find that creative. All those women on the concerts gave Paul Stanley inspiration. You can't blame him that this is just a simple lyric, that's rock n roll ! I agree for Exile on Main Street en London Calling: many fillers and nearly killers. I had this 2 albums and I sold them again. But the Sandinista album of The Clash is really great! I had that album of The Wall but I sold it also. I bought the 7" the Wall Part II though! Check my vinyl videos also! Greetings from Belgium Jason
Ответитьsome hot takes here lol
ОтветитьLove your opinions even if I don't always agree ❤😂
ОтветитьI completely agree that Aja, Exile, and Wall are overrated. But at last someone who knows what they are talking about has put Pet Sounds and the Beach Boys in their place. The Beach Boys put out some great singles, but they are not an album band and, as you say, it is ridiculous to rate them alongside The Beatles.
ОтветитьI am so happy that you finally discovered the brilliance of Secret Treaties!!
Ответить"The Wall" is just an overblown sob-fest about how Roger Waters' Dad never came home from WWII.
ОтветитьBlue Oyster Cult's live album On Your Feet or on Your Knees is Blue Oyster cult in full flight and at their Total strengths.
ОтветитьFantastic list. So refreshing to hear a different opinion on these albums other than high praise constantly.
ОтветитьTotally agree with Pet Sounds as most overrated. It's No. 2 on Rolling Stones' poll of the top 500 albums of all time, topping EVERY Beatles record (Abbey Road rated fifth). Get real!
Ответитьbat out of hell, most of springsteen's material, a fair share from robert zimmerman (bob dylan), all of u2, kansas, journey, foreigner, reo speed wagon, phil collins. i'll think of some more, but that's a good start.
ОтветитьI'm a huge Rush fan but I never listen to 2112. I used to be a Kiss fan back when my musical I.Q was low but I thought Destroyer was overrated. Before I put on this video I was hoping you would choose Exile on Main St.
Ответить10 albums I feel became overrated because they got played to death and shoved down our throats on FM radio, and I felt like the albums didn't live up to the hype...
In no particular order...
1. The Joshua Tree -- U2
2. Dookie -- Green Day
3. Vitalogy -- Pearl Jam
4. The Wall -- Pink Floyd
5. Women And Children First -- Van Halen
6. For Those About To Rock -- AC/DC
7. The Game -- Queen
8. s/t -- Whitesnake
9. Nevermind -- Nirvana
10. Portrait Of An American Family -- Marilyn Manson
I remember seeing a KISS poster when I was 15 and thinking, is their music as stupid as they look? So today because of your vid I popped over to to Spotify to see, and sure enough I was an insightful 15 year old. But one thing they do right is have RUSH as an opening act for more eyes and ears to see and hear, and the rest is rock history.
ОтветитьMust admit, was surprised when you 1st started talking about Secret Treaties. If you had said Tyranny and Mutation by Blue Oyster Cult I might agree.
ОтветитьDick Dale's commentary on the Beach Boys: "them ho-dads in their 409"
Ответитьcant agree with the pet sounds opinions but they got other albums that are also great that dont get the same shine so i agree that it is slightly overrated
ОтветитьCan't buy a thrill is better than Aja. Its the album I've played most the last year. I just think Aja is to jazzy.
ОтветитьRight Wing or Left Wing delusional nonsense lol
ОтветитьIt's always great, these days, to see someone willing to take on Pet Sounds. Better than the Beatles? Just insane. The songs are mid, IMO, the playing is studio musicians, and the production may be fine on some levels, but the constant drenching of reverb on everything is simply oppressive. Oh, and I don't like the Beach Boys vocal sound, period. It's fine, just fine.
And the Wall. I loved it the first time I heard it, and it got old by literally the second listen.
Im commenting live as such
Kiss ...heard a few songs by them and was not impressed so i never heard Destroyer. In later years Crazy Crazy Nights is a perfect dumb rock song though...great image....youd kill for that
Trout Mask Replica...crap one listen is more than enough
Blue Oyster Cult...never heard anything other than Dont Fear The Reaper. Would be unfair to comment. Maybe i should give them a try
Aja...never heard ...could add to a list if albums to check out
2112...an album i have heard. I recall the guitar parts by Lifeson being good but overall the thing did nothing for me. I do like Rush though
London Calling...an iconic album cover but The Clash never made a good album despite a few goid individual songs
Enjoyed the video but don't agree about Aja!
ОтветитьTHANK YOU ! I have never understood "Pet Sounds" while being told what a fantastic masterpiece it was. The Beatles may have been "influenced" by the Beach Boys but then they made actual classics
Ответить1987, 16 years old. I'd become somewhat of an Indie / Goth kid (JAMC, PWEI, NMA) and I started at my new 6th form college. Some sort of social gravity pulls all the black-clad kids together and my universe is blown wide open by three albums introduced by my new friends: 2112, Master of Puppets and Machine Gun Etiquette. All maybe overrated in their own way, but the affection I hold them in doesn't care.
ОтветитьSorry, mate: London Calling delivers.
ОтветитьYou talk too much. The intro went on and on. Just get straight to the list.
ОтветитьSecret Treaties is a great album, the pinacle of 'monster-billy'. So glad you gave it another chance. Harvester of Eyes is a great track. Agents of Fortune is their best, imo. The last track is called "The Revenge Of Vera Gemini", just a haunting and amazing song. Patti Smith does the backing vocals and it's absolutely eerie.
2112, Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres is the height of their prog epic phase. I also think it's the best phase as well. 2112 is a great song but side two is ok at best. Something For Nothing being the only strong song on that side, imo. Hemispheres, all day.
The vast majority of these bands are utter garbage man, never ,ever lace the boots of Black Sabbath, They're pure crap, Kiss, van halrn etc, pure b.s .
ОтветитьWhat about Big In Vegas by Buck Owens?
ОтветитьJust 10? I can think of at least a thousand?! Or ten?! And then there's the complete dumbing-down of the human race since the 90s that over-praises every piece of unthinking trash that's EVER been released. Critics haven't been objective-or well, CRITICAL even!-SINCE 1990, so basically this includes almost EVERYTHING that has EVER been released SINCE 1990 right up to now!
ОтветитьI've lost the will to watch after 2 mins so bye.
ОтветитьAbsolutely right about Aja. The Royal Scam was better.
Ответить
