I dislike these type of wasps, but I thought Yellow Jackets live in the ground. Are these not Paper Wasps? I thought Paper Wasps has some benefits for the environment and kill bad garden pests??

I’ve never been stung by anything but there’s a nest under the panel of the wall of my house and I’ve definitely smacked and sprayed them a few times.

How fast to these nests grow? When the nests are small or just beginning, there should not be too much danger. I recently knocked down the start of a nest with just one wasp on it. It pays to survey your property.

Why don't you just spray them with some wasp spray? I took out a nest almost that big last week and other times bigger ones - just with some spray / no gear. And for ground nests I just use a bit of Sevin powder at the entrance hole. No digging. That has worked on my property for 20 years now. Only for nests close to house / shop though. I get along fine with yellow jackets in general. They fly in my house when the door is open and are very non-aggressive. I've often carried them back outside on my hand. I have never been stung by a yellow jacket unless it felt attacked - like if I accidentally put my hand down on it or something like that.

I ran over a nest while mowing the lawn and got stung at least 10 times.

You should never approach a yellowjacket nest because they're pissed off. They're ALWAYS pissed off!

I tend my garden often, out of no where I got swarmed one day. I dropped something on the ground directly on top of their ground entrance unknowingly and they went bonkers. Did not feel good. I got them with dawn soap and nose later on.

Had a bunch of these in an underground nest. I parked a running push mower over the hole and let it run until it ran out of gas.

My favorite was the video where you put on the bee suit and encircled the nest with a garbage bag, tied it off, and froze it. It was the most intelligent option because you left a minimal number of yellow jackets behind.
