Snow White Remake : Love Gets a Demotion

I'm later than usual on this one, but I couldn't resist saying a few words about the new Snow White remake starring Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler. Recently, a series of interviews have resurfaced which reveal that the writers have planned some pretty serious changes to the original story. Outrage ensued along with a spat of rumors that the film was being shut down or Zegler fired. So far as I can tell, none of that is true and the film is proceeding as planned. But this does leave the opportunity to discuss those changes which are (if the tapes can be believed) being made. As Rachel Zegler has explained numerous times, the love story is being aborted (or at least downplayed) in order to establish Snow White as a strong, independent woman who needs no man and is meant to take leadership. In this essay, we’ll be discussing some of the reasons behind this change, as well as some relevant historical precedents that can inform our understanding of the reasons why love is taking the back seat to the pursuit of power.
