AMD Ryzen: 4 vs. 2 Sticks of RAM on R5 5600X for Up to 10% Better Performance

I have MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX.
I had 8x4 DDR4 Kits and they were highly unstable even at 2133.
So now I have 16x2 (32GB) dual channel.
This is my message to everyone who owns MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX, get yourself dual channel memory and make your life easy.

Great video man, now for the AMD 7800X3D would I be better running 4 8 or 16gb cards or would I be better off with 2 16gb cards gonna be dropping it into a asrock b650 live mixer

Revisiting this video on the 17th of December 2023 I have ordered a 5800X3D with 4x8GB DDR4 3600 CL18. Main reason beng there is no guarentee of dual rank 16GB memory and the only way to tell is once you have it in your system to check. It cost me more than 2x16Gb but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Hopefully I won't have any issues running it at its rated speed using 4 sticks (touch wood).

I don’t know much about computers but I inherited my little brothers computer and it only had 2x8gb ram on it’s b550 (think ) motherboard so I bought 2x8gb more but the computer refuses to work and I found out the Ryzen 3 (or was it 5) 1600 only worked with two sticks …so no I’m after a new budget processor so I get some use of the 2x8gb sticks I bought and this should work well

Ryzen is truly a mysterious creature.
When I added two additional sticks to my 1700x, I swore there was a noticeable difference in performance, albeit very minimal and just barely noticeable. I've also heard you cant run at 3200mhz or use XMP on first gen Ryzens as well. Guess what, I do and it's been stable ever since. B450 Tomahawk non-max, 32gbs of c16 G.Skill Trident Z, and OC'd 4.4GHz all core on air only for those wondering.

hey steve. can you redo this test with the 5800x3d? im getting a new case and i wanna double my ram. i wanna know if i should go 2-32gb sticks or 4-16gb sticks.

Have a 5700x with 2x8GB 3600Mhz CL18 single rank, to put 32GB should I get another same 2x8GB kit or change it for a new 2x16GB kit?

I run four sticks of 16GB memory for 64GB total DDR4-3200. Two of them are dual rank - dual channel, and two of them are single rank - dual channel. I've never had any sort of issues with it. System base is ASUS X570-P, Ryzen 9 5900x, 64GB Crucial RGB Pro DDR4-3200 CL16. I know I don't need 64GB of memory usually but I sometimes use multiple virtual machines on multiple monitors.

please someone Smart help me... I currently have a mobo Asrock x470 Master Sli and 2x8 GB 3200 ram with ryzen5600x... If i install 2 more stick, it won't run at 3200mhz right?... (I read in the Asrock page that it may run at lower speed with quad channel and not at 3200mhz)...So is better to dump it and get a 2x16 new sticks??...

Recently bought 2 more sticks of ram for my 5600x, going from 2x8gb 3200mhz to 4x8gb. I actually gained between 50-100 avg fps in both valorant and CSGO. Absolutely crazy lol, thanks for doing this testing!! It really showed a massive difference in CPU bound esport titles 👌

This video is inconclusive for channels. All you're doing is showing 32Gb is better than 16Gb. Why didn't you use 4x 4Gb and 2x 8Gb?

Well there are motherboards designed with just 2 memory slots so why would someone buy a motherboard designed with 4 memory slot just to use 2?????? 🤪🤪

Could it be that running the 2 x 8 ram sticks results in it being ran as dual-channel but single rank since newer 8gb ram sticks are single rank these days due to how the industry standard IC has move from 4 to 8gb. However running 2 x 16gb sticks will not see the performance lost since most 16gb sticks are dual rank modules and 2 x 16gb will result in dual channel and dual rank.

So if you populate 2 slots your enable dual channel and benefit higher bandwidth , but if you populate all 4 you get dual rank but loose dual channel basically OR you can combine the two by having 2x 16Gb ram sticks on one channel OR 4x 8Gb ram sticks on the two channels. Did i get it right ?!
Those PC building is an experience from himself, i remember why i used to just buy a mac back when there was affordable yet never cheap. 🤣 Guess it would be profitable in the long term to learn and keep track of PC technology.

Do you need a quad channel mobo to get any of the benefits of using 4 sticks if ram?
I keep hearing amd gets more of a performance boost with 4 sticks vs 2 sticks.
But it's really hard for me to find a quad channel mobo.

On my Asrock b550m Pro4, adding two 8GB sticks made no difference with my Ryzen 5600. T-Force CL18 memory. I am going to try the T-Create CL14 memory. On Amazon Team says you may get either single or dual rank and there doesn't seem to be a way to know before you buy them. So, I have ordered 4x8GB and 2x16GB and I hope it makes a difference. My understanding is the 8GB B-Die should be single rank. I don't know if my board will even work with 4 dual rank dimms, I am guessing it won't. My lows in Assassins' Creed Odyssey on a 3080 10GB are pretty bad. Dips into the 30s several times during benchmark 1080p Ultra settings.

Are you joking? I know this video is two years old but I just found it and I am baffled. The huge impact that dual rank memory has on Ryzen CPU perdormance over single rank is common knowledge since the early days of Zen 1. "Accidentally discovering" a performance gain several generations of Zen later is absolutely cringe. Have you never heard of bank interleaving? My trust in GN is shattered beyond repair.

According to Hardware Unboxed, the reason for four 8GB sticks being faster than two 8GB sticks is not using more slots.
The real reason is that most 8GB sticks are single-rank. Four single-rank = quad-rank. It would be the same as two dual-rank sticks (two 16GB sticks because 16GB sticks are normally dual-rank).
Also, single-rank doesn't mean single-sided and dual-rank doesn't mean two-sided. It can be tested with special programs or you can ask other people, or ask the manufacturer. But the rule of thumb is single-rank 8GB sticks and everything from 16GB per stick is dual-rank.

so the amd r9 7950x supports 5200mhz @ 2x2R and 3600 4x2R... so am i better off buying 4 3600 sticks or 2 5200 sticks... just go for 4 5200 sticks?

This makes me wonder how Zen 4 and X3D chips will interact with the new DDR5 memory
