The British Museum is full of stolen artifacts

Its not really “for the world to see” when almost all the poorer countries can’t even visit the UK without a tourist visa.

I am African and let me tell you something about these objects ;
These objects would’ve ended up in the same museums today anyway had any African found them , they would’ve sold them to the best offering price .
So let’s not pretend that we would’ve kept them in our museums back then when we didn’t even have a piece of bread let alone museums.

Every museum is like this, museums in France, Germany,Turkey even Japan also have foreign artifacts

"Yeah we stole your precious cultural artifacts but we will LOAN them to you for a bit if you cough up the money for them"

Stollen but also legally acquired? A lot of British people discovered history of the nations which were neglected before the British arrived. Furthermore, items once in a museum should never leave, this is a policy which should apply for all and not just families. These artifacts were trophys or property of Britain at the time, these are all legal and should not undermine the accomplishments of those who discovered or acquired them.

It's really insulting to act like it's a favor to keep other cultures' items.

It would be so easy to return the stolen items and put replicas in the British museum instead, visitors wouldn't even care!

Update, now they want back their stolen artifacts.

When the British Museum steal from others, it is "contested", when others steal from the British Museum it is "stolen"

That’s just history baby. Britain conquered these primitive countries and took their stuff as trophies. It must be a sore reminder of how powerful the British empire was.

These stolen artifacts should all be returned to its origins. It's just a disgrace to showcase these in a museum by the people who stole it. Shows the low humanity can get.

When anyone tells you that the British Museum should keep the items because it's the best place to preserve them, just remind them that the museum used corrosive chemicals and metal tools in the 30s to "clean" the Parthenon marbles (from all the smog that accumulated on them in London), making them lose much of their original detailing.

Funny u call British Museum stealing, BUT in fact they’ve been reserving those for humanity sake. If those artifacts were in the hands of the native, they wouldn’t be kept in best condition. If they’d cared, why would they have sold them to the British from the first place, or why wouldn’t they have started digging them before the British come? You don’t think once they get it back, they will sell it again? And the most reason why those countries crying now because they want those to promote their tourism & make money.

Why does this just focus on the British museum?

Are we not going to talk about the Taizong Horses in the Penn Museum? Or the Bust of Nefertiti in Berlin? Or the Zimbabwe Bird in Cape Town? Or the Priam’s Treasure in Moscow? Or the Horses of St. Marks in Rome? Or a vandalised piece of a Veronese painting in Venice? Go and look at the treasures in the Vatican if you want the most looted collection in history.

Had these artifacts not been taken in by the British long ago, they would have likely been lost, destroyed, or hidden away in private collections. It would cease to be a world museum if all the world artifacts were to be sent away. Only to end up in the private quarters of some African dictator, only to be stolen or destroyed during the next civil war
