September in the Trivulzio Tapestries - Bramantino and Benedetto da Milano and his assistants

The month of September also follows the compositional scheme typical of the entire cycle of tapestries designed by Bramantino and produced by the Vigevano workshop. In the centre, the personification of the month - resembling Bacchus - is surrounded by figures narrating the various activities of the period, dedicated to the production of wine. Among them, those of the patron of the series, Gian Giacomo Trivulzio and his wife Beatrice d'Avalos - overseeing these operations - seem to confirm that September bore good fruit. Under the sign of the scales - even if history will take another course, adverse to the fortunes of the Trivulzios - their whole world is in perfect balance.
