This video has really helped me to achieve a level of skill I never thought possible, just last week I used my new bo staff skills to keep a crowd of potential threats away from me. Let’s just say that those girls will think twice about trying to “sell cookies” to me!

Its called "kambu veelchi" in South India, practiced as an art and in defence for about 2000 years or more.

I carry a light, but very strong, rattan walking stick. It's is dressed up with some reflective tape for walking at night. Several stabs and strikes are obvious and I practice combos. But what I lack, and don't find on YT, are moves against a bad guy who closes and gets me in his grasp. A topic of interest! Thanks

Hi Matt. Great videos and instruction for me, as a complete noob (and senior, to boot). While you make these movements seem so simple and effortless, they can actually be a bit confusing and counterintuitive for the beginning student, since they must reverse everything. Showing you from the back (facing the same direction as the student) would orient all the student's movements in the same direction as the teacher, but of course, the student would lose visual contact with the teacher's hands, etc. Have you considered reversing the image (almost like looking in a mirror)? It should be easy enough with video editing, and would make it far more intuitive for the student to better mimic your movements.
Thanks again, Glenn.

Thanks for making this video. You see, i want to learn a skills that would help me if i have a long straight stick which is really helpful. I wanna learn martial arts just to protect my self at school, at the mall (if neccesary), or maybe everywhere. I am currently 13 years old and want to master 3 martial arts and master this skill before i turn 14 because if i turned 14, then i will be moved to a public school (yes i am studying in private school) which is very dangerous and alot of bullies are intense. Again thanks for making this video, you earn a sub

Years ago the ability to spin my dollar store broom like a bo staff in an aggressive fast menacing way while screaming and yelling with command allowed me to save a coworker being attacked by a gang of 12 dudes who already had him on the ground in work’s parking lot… I broke through their circle, scared the big dudes, grabbed my coworker and got us both back in our work building. Don’t tell me spinning is useless, you can also use it to distract, build control and strength. Peace folks ✌

All great exercises for old stiff folks too... great for arthritic folks! Great tutorial for novices and teachers. Spinning isn't useless, it teaches space, time, rhythm in real time. Used it my entire life for health and defence response. Now it's all about flexibility and staying fit for advercity's challenges. This video is an example of a very selfless share... goodness comes from empathy and self resilience.

I would say that spins create dexterity and create a relationship with the stick, teaching spatial awareness and also smoothness of motion. I was a competitive fencer for many years and our coach, Michael Dasaro, who was coaching the women's Olympic fencing team at the time had us doing all kinds of exercises-- footwork with our eyes closed, visualization, fencing each other in wild pirate meles, in addition to our regular drills and bouting. It all teaches you something.

Interesting that is how I do it but I have done research that says pinky leads the way, which I simply don't understand and it does not work with my body/what I'm doing. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. This is a great tutorial and has helped me a lot. I am a beginner, and nobody else has taken the time to show the right way to do it. Thank you for making this video, I appreciate it you earned a subscriber.
