This is the journey to Snaefall, the highest point in the Isle of Man. This unique Victorian experience, which is around five miles long, has been in operation since 1895.
The journey to Snaefall includes three layovers. The first is a horse tram that lasts for 10 minutes. The horse tram ride is from Villa Marina, the southern terminus to Derby Castle Station to the tram station to Laxey.
The second ride is from Derby Castle to Laxey by an electric tramway operated by the Manx Electric Railway. This electric tramway is the only one on the British Isles that takes you to the top of a mountain. The electric tramway is an experience in itself as it takes one through the cliffs with a seaside view throughout the ride.
The journey to Laxey takes about 25mins and from Laxey, one can catch the tram to Snaefall. There is a cafe at the summit where one can stop for refreshments.
Peaked at 2,036 feet above sea level, you may be able to see some, or all, of the Seven Kingdoms - England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, the Isle of Man and the kingdoms of heaven and the sea.
There are historically significant sites one could see during the tram journey to and from the summit.
1. The Laxey mines, that was opened in 1782 and closed in 1929.
2. The Agneash Waterfall.
3. The Laxey wheel, the largest surviving original working waterwheel in the world.
