Motivation above all. without that nothing happens! Now I'll watch the video and change my mind.😅
edit - after watching, I still think: motivation. Though a routine maintains the structure when motivation flags. and also a goal is sort of a vague thing somewhere in the future, for me at least. Unless it's a specific thing like that B2 certificate, though these are short-lived goals as you said.

Identity is important, but I also need concrete habits/routines to stay on track. Thanks!

I think anything that you set out to accomplish begins with a decision. That decision is either based on some level of curiosity, just something that you are legitimately interested in learning/experiencing, or whatever. Or based on necessity. For instance something that you are required to learn for work, something that you would no necessarily choose for yourself.

And then, to follow through on that decision you need to have the right mindset. Mindset, mindset, mindset. You have to be willing to change up your lifestyle to accommodate this new learning journey. And be very consistent with your process. And your process will likely change a little bit over time, on exactly how you feel you need to proceed from point A to point B. But be consistent. Eventually this will become a habit, which will outline your new routine.

But none of this will happen if you lack the proper mindset. Because the truth is that you will definitely not feel motivated each and every day to learn this language or this new software or whatever it is. But with the right mindset, you become disciplined, and that is how you win. Small victories every day. Not over the task, but over yourself.

Love all of your content! Hope you are having a great weekend.

Te kōingo o te ngākau - desire!

I've watched your video now, and I would have to agree with the 'identity' element of language learning. I've been learning my heritage language (Māori, New Zealand) since the beginning of 2019, and a big drive for me over that time has been strengthening my cultural identity. I plan to start learning Spanish in July, so it will be interesting to see whether my drive and motivation for learning Spanish differs from learning my heritage language. Maybe I'll have to take on an 'identity' as a lifetime language learner in order to succeed in Spanish?

Motivation first, leading to establishing a routine. As long as you have those two things you'll meet and surpass your goals down the road.

Your English really is astonishingly good. I can see you hit a few goals there!!

But yes, I don’t really believe in “goals”. I am with Steve Kaufmann - language learning is about *exploration*.

Wow, what a great topic and what a great video, as always! Really enjoyed watching it!! I think that motivation and goals/objectives can be helpful in the short run, identity is more like a long term thing whereas routines/habits are probably somewhere in between. Once you have a good routine/right habits it can actually lead to the identity/DNA kind of thing. But my favorite is the obsession (in a positive way 😀) because once you are obsessed with something (like learning a new language for example) you just keep absorbing it! It's important though not to quit on it in the same way as it's important to maintain your identify over time!

identity is an interesting question - what is it actually? can a language become part of our identity if we have never lived in it? italian was def. part of my identity back then but isn't anymore. german and english are part of my identity, because i use them all the time. romanian isn't because i don't use it irl. the others are def. not because i don't know enough (= not fluent) so i'm not sure about that identity thing?

I too hope I can pronounce English like you...amazing! you are also English Laura, that is why I told you before that it is not only a question of motivation, but your talent is a gift offered by the God who loves you. Thank you very much Laura and good luck.

GOALS give you the MOTIVATION to keep up a specific ROUTINE. Once it becomes a habit, it’s part of your IDENTITY 😎 ….. but seriously, I think all four are important ‘ingredients’ for an effective language learning strategy 👍🎁💝🙌🧐
