I'm beginning to think standalones are my favourite type of book. :)

Every time I hear the name Kalista it brings me back to a D&D campaign me and a couple of friends played, Kalista was a character in it. It has nothing to do with the book you showed, but Kalista was a very dark character who kicked the Devil out of hell because in her mind the devil was too nice of a guy. You can I think fill in how it was like for us as a party to have a party member so evil in it. And yes we were the good guys. Funny thing Geralt (yes the one of Rivia) made a cameo and his mother also.

Anyway the campaign was a lot of fun and I have fond memories about our silly adventures.

As for the books I haven't read any of them, but T Kingfisher is mentioned a lot here on Booktube so I'll surely check her works in the near future.

I quite enjoyed Ruination. Nothing to deep or complex, but I quite enjoyed Kalista and the ending was a massive surprise.

I‘d recommend The Shadow Society by Marie Rutkoski. It has to do with alternative worlds where the Great Chicago Fire didn’t happen and Darcy, who doesn’t remember anything before the day she was abandoned in front of a Chicago firehouse. I enjoyed it so much I wished it wasn’t a standalone after reading it despite that being one of the reasons I picked it in the first place, to read a story from beginning to end without waiting for the next book.

If I have not played Arcane or not familiar League of Legends, would I be able to enjoy Ruination?

Babel was for sure written to be a series IMO. I thought it would wrap up nicely but she absolutely opens it up for another at the end.

The enemies to lovers trope in The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy felt very forced to me, so that was a disappointing read because I think their chemistry was great. Towards the end, I was much more interested in the fantasy backdrop than the romance. I've been meaning to read A Dowry of Blood but haven't ever heard it described in terms of abusive relationships, so it sounds a lot more interesting now!

Id love to see a list of 1st books that could be stand alone. A lot of series sound great to me but i don't want to read book one because i am worried that i won't want to read 87 novels, 14 novellas and 3 short story collections just to resolve book 1.
