A traitor is a traitor, no excuses. Also this guy betrayed his country because of his wife’s past not his. A past that he did not even live..

You can tell that she wore the boots in that relationship because she was 1.- An activist, a rebel; someone who won’t stand down.
2.- She convinced her husband of staying in the USSSR wtf! He wanted to give them a better life and he risked and lost his life.
3.- She knew about the risks all the time and she never probably told him to stop.
The power is manipulation.
Poor guy, even though he was grown enough and intelligent enough to perceive his fate.
That does not make him a hero. Betrayal in all means is for the weak.

The ending made me really sad.. life isn't like the movies. The hero doesn't always win in the end but he did his part

The moral of this story is if you fail, try again. maybe an insane chain of contrived coincidences will occur that will allow you to succeed

People in hostile nations risk their lives to give us strategic intel, thinking the US will respect/honour their sacrifice when the provider reaches a moment of need... and we habitually respond with crickets. The American government is run by generic American sociopaths--they will take and take and expect and demand even, and they might use words to tell you they're grateful, but never fool yourself that they'll reciprocate for your kindness/risk. We're a nation of exploiters, hoarders, and narcissists.
We could've helped this guy's wife/family just like we could've helped thousands on the ground in Afghanistan who'd aided America over the last 20 years, but we drained and dropped them too.

Most CIA operatives know beforehand that the the government could disavow knowledge of them. This is why some who can afford legal insurance pay a hefty price for it.

The difference between American turning a spy for Russia and a Russian to USA is to me it appears that former is for money and later is their anger against their country top leader such as Stalin etc., and their role in suppressing their own citizens . My understanding

Ames was the one who discovered we British had a high value Russian asset, we had the station chief of the Russian embassy in London in our pocket and because we did the friendly thing and told the US information that concerned them they wanted to know more and be the main character as always. Ames heard whispers of a mole found out and eventually found our asset. Luckily through one of the most daring escapes of the Cold War we managed to get him and his family out of Russia. Ames is a scumbag of the highest order. Shame the CIA couldn’t just take the intelligence we gave them and keep their mouth shut.

“In the eyes of posterity, it will inevitably seem that in safeguarding our freedom, we destroyed it.  The vast clandestine apparatus we built up to prove our enemy’s resources and intentions only served in the end to confuse our own purposes.  That practice of deceiving others for the good of the state led infallibly to our deceiving ourselves, and that vast army of clandestine personnel built up to execute these purposes were soon caught up in the web of their own sick fantasies with disastrous consequences for them and us.”  —— Malcolm Muggeridge

CIA - the greatest enemy to liberty and national sovereignty globally. It is a terrorist organization and not accountable to congress or rule of law. The world would be a safer, freer, and less evil place without that psychopathic organization.
