Joel McCrea fan but one lousy movie. Gail Russell could never act tho quite pretty...you need more. I rate this as a C- and a waste of my time. Besides I had seen it before but couldn't remember the end. Never again lol

I saw this when I was little (I wasn't supposed to watch divorce or horror shows, but I saw this somehow), and it scared the daylights out of me...still, and I'm almost 70. This is a masterpiece - I thought it was a Hitchcock film until I learned to read. Masterful in everything: setting, storyline, cast, music - and really creepy in atmosphere. I never thought about having another half of my house empty (as a subject for a suspense movie - except for the attic and other apartments in the same building). 😱 I know I would be hearing things over there all the time - it's genius for a spooky setting - I can't think of another scary movie that used an empty other part of the house. Gail Russell is perfect, she reminds me of a baby Ann Sheridan. Thank you so much, this is the best.

Did anyone notice how the little boy is neglected while the little girl is given attention, never dismissed or scolded and taught cultural things like playing the piano. I know it's just a movie, but it seems to reflect most biased cultural norms when it comes to raising boys vs girls.

The actress, Nona Griffith, who played the little girl Ellen in the film was very charming. However, I was disappointed to see she only acted in one other film in her career. Herbert Marshall had one of the great voices in film. Joel McCrae was alway great in films and Gail Russell was great in The Uninvited.

Were I entrusted with the care of two small children, one of whom was badly behaved, I wouldn't sit in a darkened movie theater with the badly-behaved one where I couldn't see him.
That lack of caution is nothing, however, compared to the poor parenting provided by the father of that boy.
There had to have been years of neglect to produce such a brat.

I was born in 1950 and I have studied and researched the 40s and 50s just for fun. Movies from this era seem so glamorous to me. I love movies from this era, and I always check out the hairstyles for some reason. I think modern women should bring back 40s hairstyles. I also like the Betty Page 50s look.

This movie is the worst piece of shit ever. Every one of the characters...especially the children...are detestable and so is the production. Gawd awful. It reeks of crap. All the actors are repulsive...especially Joel McCrae and the so-called lead actress, if you can call her that. The plot is fucking terrible and never makes sense. I've never seen anything so bad. Even the soundtrack by Ernest Toch is worse than the movie. I hate to day I actually watched it all the way, hoping it might get better. I was so wrong. Other than that, you may enjoy it...if you really enjoy dreadful movies.
