This comment section is an abyss of everything wrong with trying to put a moral label on your past. People will try to justify discriminatory practices or why their country sided with the nazis if we think of history on terms of 'bad' and 'good'. What we should do is not get in an argument but see what leads to what

I'm disappointed that the Ottoman empires, Persian empire, and other middle east or arab or muslim groups were not mentioned in the conquering and enslaving first part. . they were the ones who sold the slaves to europeans and took millions up to middle east and north africa too. African nations and tribes also captured and subjugated weaker ones and sold them to the arabs and europeans too.

I feel like we are conflating "this country has done one or more bad things" and "this country owes its existence to atrocity".

One important facet about this question is that the answer has the potential to change with time---there's no telling what the seemingly "innocent" countries' governments or societies could do in the future. The answer can even change if morality changes in the future, too.

The only people I've seen who seem to think that any country has a perfectly clean history are deluded Socialists who say that the USSR and its allies never committed any kind of atrocities. They seem to be the most willing to support bloodshed and horror out of any group of people I've ever seen.

If you say that the decendants of victims of different crimes are guilt free, I would invite you to reconsider the countries in Eastern Europe that suffered under communist and nazi imperialism imposed on them by outside forces. No country chose to be invaded by Russian communists (whether they were eventually incorporated in the Soviet Union as a colony of Russia or whether they were kept as a vassal state) and no state chose to be invaded by the nazis to be incoporated in their empire either. Sure, some of these had land empires of their own (same thing as overseas empires minus the boats), but not all.

First of all, all of history is about the strong conquering the weak. War, invasion, persecution, and exploitation have been a part of human civilization since the beginning. So no single nation or people are innocent. That's why all nations fail scrutiny.

And we should also discuss the idea of the likes of the Caribbean nations you talked about. And this also applies to the Pacific islands. If a nation has minimal population, it cannot be compared to larger nations. If you only have a few hundred thousand people, you don't have the same complexity of societal interactions that lead to negative actions. They're not real players in the larger world. And their independence is illusory.

So in conclusion, most of this kind of speculation is very myopic. Everyone has modern relativistic morality. Allowed by the peace and prosperity given to them by the 'evil American' hegemony.

Everyone chides the U.S. and Western Civilization in general for their past atrocities. And yes they do have them. But to act like the world would be a better place if it existed under nearly any other country, or ideology is laughable.

If nearly any other nation or ideology got the reigns of power, they would abuse it far more than 'American Imperialism'.

Civilization will always have problems. And injustices will happen because it's run by people. And people are flawed. The best we can do is try to learn from past mistakes and try to be better in the future.

The Caribbean should not feel shame for its past for obvious reasons, but then why should Eastern Europeans feel shame for their past? I do not get it. The authoritarian regimes of these countries were the direct result of Russian colonialism. It was something forced upon these people.
