The day Carl Sagan died, we didn't just lose a great scientist. We've lost one of the most brilliant minds of our time. This elegance, intelligence and respect for the other side of the argument is terribly missed in our current society of "who's the loudest".

the problem is even if both sides have minimum nuclear weapons if either side has one more than another than the other side will say "wait a minute, why wouldn't we have one more than them", and the cycle continues

I really like carl sagan, i just dont completely agree with his take on this. Its an unfortunate reality that death is far from the worst fate possible, and mutually assured destruction is what keeps alot of us from attacking those with differing ideas or cultures. It is sad, but maybe one day we can instead aim these weapons away from each other and unite as a species, but i dont believe that will happen until the entire world has a common enemy

I think Mr. Sagan might have oversimplified thereby possibly flawing his logic. He does not define a ”minimum detterent". Systems fail , opponents counter measure and there is a need for modernization. Carl Sagan is a great mind and beautiful to listen too,but he virtue signals too much and he is not a realist.
